The first ever Hogwarts Trivia competition was held during the 1986–1987 school year to determine who had better knowledge of Hogwarts: current students or former students.[1]
History[]
The tournament started when a debate between Nymphadora Tonks and Gwenog Jones about who knew more about Hogwarts went unresolved. When the pair asked Jacob's sibling to help, they were unable to, but they suggested an official competition. The three then brought the idea to Albus Dumbledore, who agreed to host the competition and stipulated that each team must be comprised of five members with one person from each house.[1]
The first round[]
- "Both teams have been given time to study up on this round's theme - The Hogwarts founders."
- — Albus Dumbledore[src]
For the first round, the participants had to write down each founder and their famous artefact, with the round scoring one point. The correct answer was: Godric Gryffindor - the Sword of Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff - Hufflepuff's Cup, Rowena Ravenclaw - Ravenclaw's Diadem, and Salazar Slytherin - Slytherin's Locket. The former student team got the question correct, but it is unknown if the current student team did. The current student team had a discussion about which was the correct artefact of Slytherin, his sash, locket, or cloak.[1]
The second round[]
- "I trust you've all come prepared. This round is worth two points, and it will focus on the Hogwarts ghosts."
- — Albus Dumbledore[src]
For the second round, the participants were given a clue from Dumbledore. "Each of our beloved ghosts led a noteworthy life. One even served as a courtier to a king. Unfortunately they were executed for failing to fix the teeth of a renowned lady-in-waiting." They had to write down the name of the ghost, the king the ghost served, the lady the ghost tried to help, and the year of the ghost's execution. The correct answer was: Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington, Henry VII, Lady Grieve, and 1492. The former student team got the question correct, but it is unknown if the current student team did. The current student team had a discussion about which year was correct, 1492, 1937, or 1249. This round was worth two points.[1]
The third round[]
- "We've had a long line of illustrious headmasters and headmistresses, but also, a long line of caretakers."
- — Albus Dumbledore[src]
For the final round, the participants had to place four Hogwarts caretakers (Apollyon Pringle, Rancorous Carpe, Hankerton Humble, and Gladwin Moon) in chronological order. The correct answer was: Hankerton Humble, Rancorous Carpe, Gladwin Moon, and Apollyon Pringle. The former student team got this question incorrect, but it is unknown if the current student team did. The current student team had a discussion about who came after Hankerton Humble, Rancorous Carpe or Gladwin Moon. This round was worth four points.[1]
Results[]
It is unknown who won the contest and secured bragging rights for one hundred years. However, after the contest, Dumbledore invited all participants and spectators to a feast to celebrate. During the feast, Tonks and Gwenog revealed that they had made Hogwarts Trivia sweatshirts for everyone who participated.[1]

Former student team[]
Behind the scenes[]
- The points attributed to the tasks were designed very poorly, as whoever won the final round was guaranteed to win the contest, regardless of the winners of the first two tasks.
- Whether or not the current student team wins is based on the decisions the player makes.
- It is currently unknown if there were any more Hogwarts Trivia contests held after this one.
- Interestingly, three of the five members of the former student team are members of the Slug Club.
