This pumpkin patch was owned and cared for by two gamekeepers at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry: an unidentified gamekeeper in the 1890s,[3] and Rubeus Hagrid. It was located behind Hagrid's Hut on the Hogwarts grounds.[2]
History[]
In the 1890–1891 school year, a pumpkin patch was grown in the same spot by one of Hagrid's predecessors.[3]
At some point around Christmas between 1983 and 1990, Greywing was distraught because he felt protective of Hagrid's pumpkins, which were no longer growing due to the winter, and was visibly distressed. Albus Dumbledore gave her a pot of Leprechaun gold to protect instead, which cheered her up.[4]
In 1986, when Fang was a puppy, he was in the pumpkin patch when he found a fairy in it which scared him. Fang then ran away and Hagrid couldn't find him, thus he asked for Jacob's sibling's help towards finding him.[5]
In 1993, Hagrid used his pumpkin patch to tether the hippogriff Buckbeak while awaiting its sentence of death.[6] With help from the Time-Turner, Harry Potter and Hermione Granger were able to successfully remove Buckbeak out of the pumpkin patch before his execution by pulling him with rope into the forest, take him back inside Hagrid's hut after everyone had else had left it, and let Sirius take him to be free.[7]
In 1996, the pumpkin patch was where Aragog's funeral took place. With the aid of Harry and Horace Slughorn, Hagrid dug a grave for the Acromantula and laid the enormous spider to rest with Slughorn saying a eulogy celebrating his memory.[8]
Usage[]
The pumpkin patch was where the gamekeeper grew enormous pumpkins for the school's Hallowe'en feast every year on 31 October. These pumpkins were usually carved into Jack-o-Lanterns and enchanted to hang from the ceiling in the Great Hall or in the corridors.[2]
