The Hogwarts librarian was an occupation and a title held at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry by an individual in charge of watching over the library and protecting all of its books.[1]
While the librarian did not have an office to work in like the teaching staff, there was a desk reserved for them within the library itself. As a member of the faculty, however, they did possess some disciplinary powers, such as the power to award and dock house points[2] and putting students in detention.[3][4]
Duties[]
The Hogwarts librarian had many duties, including:
Clerical duties:
- Establishing library rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
- Preparing the library due date sheets and maintaining overdue records.
- Cataloguing library books in order to properly making them ready for checkout.
Managerial duties:
- Monitoring the library, as well as keeping it organised, clean and neat.[5]
- Assisting students and staff members in finding the desired reading material.[6]
- Implementing and enforcing library rules, regulations, policies and procedures.[7]
- Placing spells on the books aimed at protecting them from mistreatment or theft.[8]
- Checking the authenticity of the written permissions slips for the Restricted Section.[9]
- Making sure all students have left the library by 8:00 pm, when the library closes.[10][11]
- Overseeing the Study Hall and helping students with their homework.[12]
