These owls were kept in the Owlery at Hogwarts Castle, allowing students and professors to send letters to others outside the school. The owls were also used to deliver Hogwarts acceptance letters to prospective students.[1]
Known school owls[]
Owl in 1890[]
This owl was used by Matilda Weasley in the latter part of the 1889–1890 school year to deliver a Hogwarts acceptance letter to a prospective student. It flew into the Great Hall, where Natsai Onai, Garreth Weasley, and Hector Jenkins were practising the Levitation Spell, before entering Classroom 1B and flying out of the castle. It passed two students who were fighting a number of Acromantulas and Thornbacks in the Forbidden Forest. Headed towards London, the owl was nearly killed by a group of wizard poachers and nearly burnt by a Hebridean Black. However, it arrived in London unscathed, where it successfully delivered the letter to the student.[2]
Owl in 1984[]
At some point in the latter part of the 1983–1984 school year, this owl flew into the Entrance Hall. It then entered the Potions Classroom and accidentally spilt the potion which Severus Snape was brewing, leaving him frustrated over the cauldron of unusable potion. Later that day, the owl visited Minerva McGonagall at her office to pick up a Hogwarts acceptance letter, which would be delivered to Jacob's sibling.[3]
Owl in the 1980s[]
At some point near Christmas between the 1984–1985 school year and the 1990–1991 school year, Albus Dumbledore discretely sent this owl into the Great Hall to deliver a train ticket to Ben Copper, who had lost his original ticket to travel to London with his family to celebrate the holidays with his aunt, Tinnie. Ben believed it was a holiday miracle, but Jacob's sibling later found out that Dumbledore had secretly sent the letter in order to quietly help Ben out during the holidays.[4]
Owl in 1993[]
- "Harry didn’t recognise the third owl, a handsome tawny one, but he knew at once where it had come from, because in addition to a third package, it was carrying a letter bearing the Hogwarts crest."
- — The owl delivering a letter to Harry Potter[src]
On 31 July 1993, this owl brought Harry Potter his copy of The Monster Book of Monsters, as well as a birthday card from Rubeus Hagrid, and his Hogsmeade permission form.[5]
