The wand of Horace Slughorn was made of cedarwood and dragon heartstring, measuring ten and a quarter inches. It was described as being "fairly flexible".[1]
History[]
It is most likely that Slughorn purchased his wand from Ollivanders, when he was eleven years old, and before entering Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Slughorn had once lost his wand, which had been the first time in his life he had done so. As it turned out, however, it had merely got trapped in the folds of his gown, and he soon recovered it.[2]
In the summer of 1996 whilst hiding from the Death Eaters, Slughorn used his wand to repair an entire living room non-verbally with the Mending Charm with the help of Albus Dumbledore, in the Muggle house where he was staying.[3] During the first informal meeting of the Slug Club on the Hogwarts Express, he used the healing spell Anapneo to vanish a blockage in Marcus Belby's throat.[4]
Horace Slughorn extracted his memory of what he told Tom Riddle with this wand to Harry Potter, allowing him to view Riddle's memory in Albus Dumbledore's Pensieve.[5]
On the 2 May 1998, Slughorn used this wand to duel alongside Minerva McGonagall and Kingsley Shacklebolt during the Battle of Hogwarts as they fought Lord Voldemort.[6]
Behind the scenes[]
- In the films, Slughorn's wand was unusually thick. It was also very ornate, representing Horace's liking for luxury. The wand's handle displayed a pair of tentacle-like protrusions, not unlike those of a slug. The tentacle-like protrusions even had eyespots at the ends, also like those of a slug. This may have reflected its owner's surname, Slughorn. Also, below the handle seemed to resemble a trail of snail slime, which curved around until the end. This could also reflect Horace's last name. The wand itself may have been inherited or passed down from earlier Slughorn generations, much like the Malfoy family wand.
- Slughorn's wand was a greyish, metal colour with white curved lines on the shaft. It had a very unique handle in the shape of a snail's head.
- Slughorn's wand in the films was a metal casting, making it the only metal wand shown in the entire series. In addition, the wand was depicted as 14½" long.[7]
