Hypnosis was a term used to refer to a state of consciousness in which a person was apparently rendered incapable of voluntary action and highly susceptible to suggestion or control.[1][2]
Some magical creatures, like Wampus cats, had the natural ability to perform hypnotism.[3][4]
History[]
The Circus Arcanus, a magical freak show that travelled internationally in the 1920s, included Borys the Brute, a "perfidious" hypnotist of whose "artful deception" the public were warned to be wary.[5]
During the 1990–1991 school year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, both Dolores Umbridge and Ismelda Murk were hypnotised and attacked by a rogue Wampus cat in Hogsmeade, which made them forget what happened to them. However, as they remembered seeing its yellow eyes, they incorrectly assumed the beast was a werewolf. Jacob's sibling, working with the Beast Division of the Ministry of Magic, investigated the attacks and managed to stun the cat, which was later placed in the care of Rubeus Hagrid and Professor Kettleburn.[4]
An advertisement for a product or service related to self-hypnotism was printed in an issue of the Daily Prophet in 1995.[6]
