- "It is sometimes said of the Ilvermorny houses that they represent the whole witch or wizard: the mind is represented by Horned Serpent; the body, Wampus; the heart, Pukwudgie and the soul, Thunderbird. Others say that Horned Serpent favours scholars, Wampus, warriors, Pukwudgie, healers and Thunderbird, adventurers."
- — The Houses of Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry[src]
Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry was divided into four Houses, named after magical creatures natived to the Americas: Thunderbird, founded by Chadwick Boot; Wampus, founded by Webster Boot; Horned Serpent, founded by Isolt Sayre; Pukwudgie, founded by James Steward.[1]
House systems[]
Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, located in North America, was the premier institution for magical education in the region. Established in the 17th century by Isolt Sayre, an Irish witch, and her No-Maj husband James Steward, Ilvermorny was heavily inspired by Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where Sayre was supposed to attend during her childhood. This influence was particularly evident in its House system, which divides students into four groups based on personality traits and values.[1]
Sorting[]
Unlike the Hogwarts Sorting Hat,[2] Ilvermorny's Sorting Ceremony involved enchanted carvings representing each house. When students arrived at the school, they stand before the four House statues in the entrance hall. Each statue reacted differently if it wished to claim the student: the Thunderbird statue flapped its wings, the Wampus statue roared, the Horned Serpent statue's gem glowed, and the Pukwudgie statue raised its arrow.[1] In rare cases, multiple Houses might try to claim a student. When this happens, the student chose which house to join.[1]
The four Houses of Ilvermorny[]
Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry's four houses — Thunderbird, Wampus, Horned Serpent, and Pukwudgie — are named after magical creatures, each representing a different aspect of a witch or wizard. Thunderbird symbolised the soul and was associated with adventurers, while Wampus represented the body and was linked to warriors. Horned Serpent embodied the mind and was connected to scholars, and Pukwudgie represents the heart, often associated with healers.[1]
Thunderbird[]
Thunderbird represented the soul and denoted adventurers. The Thunderbird was a large, majestic bird that summoned storms as it flew. Thunderbird students are often bold and drawn to discovery, similar to Slytherins.[1] Notable members included Porpentina Goldstein, a talented Auror, and Eulalie Hicks, an Ilvermorny professor.[3][4]
Wampus[]
Wampus represented the body and was associated with warriors. The Wampus was a panther-like beast known for its speed, strength, and near-invulnerability. Students in this house were typically brave, curious, and fiercely loyal, resembling Gryffindors.[1]
Horned Serpent[]
Horned Serpent represented the mind and was linked to scholars. The Horned Serpent is a water-dwelling, serpent with a jewel in its forehead. Isolt Sayre encountered one when she was fresh off the boat.[1] This house was associated with intellectualism, like Ravenclaw. Notable members included Seraphina Picquery, the President of the Magical Congress of the United States of America in the 1920s.[5]
Pukwudgie[]
Pukwudgie represented the heart and favoured healers. The Pukwudgie was a small, magical humanoid. James Steward, inspired by story of William the Pukwudgie his wife met, named this house after him. Pukwudgie students were often compassionate and independent, paralleling the Hufflepuffs.[1] Notable members were Queenie Goldstein, a Legilimen, and Ruby Honeysuckle, a ROCC agent.[6][7]
