"In Noctem" was a song sung by the Hogwarts Frog Choir in 1997, conducted by Filius Flitwick, shortly before the school's headmaster, Albus Dumbledore, was killed by Severus Snape. The song featured four verses, in both English and Latin, with the Latin lyrics being the same as the English ones.[1]
Lyrics
Carry my soul into the night
May the stars light my way
I glory in the sight
As darkness takes the day
Ferte in noctem animam meam
Illustrent stellae viam meam
Aspectu illo glorior
Dum capit nox diem
Cantate vitae canticum
Sine dolore actae
Dicite eis quos amabam
Me nunquam obliturum
Sing a song, a song of life
Lived without regret
Tell the ones, the ones I loved
I never will forget.
Never will forget.[1]
Behind the scenes
- In Latin, In Noctem means "Throughout the Night", or, as in the English portion of this song, "Into the Night". The Latin portion translated[2]:
Stars light the way
Carry my soul into the night
May the stars guide my way.
I glory in the sight
As darkness takes the day.
Sing a song of life
Lived without regret.
Tell the ones I love
I never will forget.
- This song is composed by Nicholas Hooper for the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and can be found on its soundtrack and in the Deleted Scenes on the Extra DVD Disc of the film.
- Part of this song can be heard in Albus Dumbledore's speech.
- The song is played during the end credits of the film at 2:31:19.
