The Intercontinental Wizard's Cup was a competition held during the 2011–2012 school year between three of the most famous wizarding schools: Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Mahoutokoro, and Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The competitors would be chosen by the Intercontinental Trophy, which would later be awarded to the winner.[1][2]
Overview[]
Students who wished to participate in the competition needed to submit their names to form a team of seven and then travel to one of the participating schools based on their school year: second and third-years would go to Ilvermorny Castle, fourth and fifth-years would compete at Hogwarts, and sixth and seventh-years would go to Mahoutokoro palace.[1]
First challenge[]
The first challenge, the Game of Wits, was chosen by the Mahoutokoro team. It consisted of at least eleven test questions about wizarding history. Each school team would receive a number of bricks, which would come together one by one to form a tower, the Tower of Magical Knowledge, when a question was correctly answered. The tower would collapse if a question was answered incorrectly, requiring the competitors to rebuild it from scratch.[3]
Three students were allowed to compete in this challenge per team. For Hogwarts, the team members were Kevin Farrell, Cassandra Vole, and another student. The school team that won the first place in the first challenge was Mahoutokoro, the second place was won by Hogwarts (five points behind Mahoutokoro), and the last place was Ilvermorny (Viggo Victor answered the question wrong, causing the tower to collapse).[3]
Second challenge[]
The second challenge was chosen by the Ilvermorny team: duelling. The challenge took place in the Duelling Dungeon and featured two types of duels, which were team and individual. Each team for the particular challenge had been decided. Additionally, outside of the team events, each person would need to face at least one individual match.[4]
During this challenge, one of Viggo's spells targeted and attacked Kevin Farrell. Robyn Thistlethwaite was furious but was stopped by Kenji Kobayashi before she could went to "flatten" Viggo.[4]
Third challenge[]
The third and final task was chosen by Hogwarts and held in the depths of the Forbidden Forest. The competitors had to navigate various obstacles, most of which were magical beasts, including some from the Americas and Asia to ensure Hogwarts had no advantage over the other teams. These creatures included the Demiguise, Nundu, Thunderbird, Acromantula, Hidebehind, and Erumpent. The goal was to retrieve a treasure hidden in a chest deep within the forest, guarded by the half-giant witch, Gawrloc.[5]
In this task, Kevin from the Hogwarts team was replaced by Daniel Page due to an injury sustained by Viggo in the previous challenge. Hogwarts emerged victorious in this task, and henceforth, the Hogwarts team won the Intercontinental Wizard's Cup.[6]
