An investigator[1] was a position held by an individual whose job it was to investigate events for legal and/or official purposes, and was a profession found in both the magical and non-magical worlds alike.
History[]
The British Ministry of Magic employed a number of different investigators across different Departments that specialised in looking into matters that pertained to their respective areas of expertise. The Beast Division, for instance, of the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures, had investigators tasked with looking into creature-related incidents, such as Mathilda Grimblehawk and her partner.[2] The Department of Magical Law Enforcement also had investigators, though their purview related to crime-solving and looking into illicit magical activity. Linderina Crane was an investigator for the Improper Use of Magic Office.[1] There was a marked difference in the authority and responsibilities between investigators found in different departments at the Ministry of Magic, however.
While investigators from other departments relied heavily on the support of Magical Law Enforcement Officers in the execution of their daily duties, as seen by Mathilda Grimblehawk, who invariably looked to former Magical Law Enforcement Squad member Cerberus Langarm whenever a creature-related incident required the Ministry to take any kind of action against other witches and wizards. When Grimblehawk had to gather evidence for her investigations, for example, such as the accounts ledger from Slug & Jiggers Apothecary, Officer Langarm had to collect it for her, and when she found possible evidence, she gave it to Langarm for examination.[2]
Investigators from the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, by contrast, were investigative officers in whom the Ministry had vested all the same law enforcement powers as regular officers. Linderina Crane was tasked with not only monitoring the activities and tracking down the members of NOTME, but also with capturing the culprits, as seen through her failed capture of a Boggart that, unbeknownst to her, had simply assumed the form of the target of her investigation.[1] Aurors were another example of investigative officers, specialising in capturing Dark wizards and witches.
As with the Improper Use of Magic Office, someone placed in charge of an investigation was referred to as a "Lead investigator", a designation bestowed upon Crane during her investigation into the activities of the Nocturnal Order of Tricks and Magical Exhibitions.[1]

Behind the scenes[]
- Although it is unknown what the difference between an investigator and a Magical Law Enforcement Officer is, it was presumably that while the latter the latter was tasked with crime prevention and community safety, the former also dealt with crime-solving,
- It was implied that the designation of "investigator" in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement was more accurately described as a rank attainable to a regular officer than a separate position, and that it was a step up from being a mere Magical Law Enforcement Officer alone, as as Linderina Crane, was seen to have the same powers of law enforcement as officers did and carried out her law enforcement duties without needing others to do it for her, and could even be put in charge of the sort of jobs that the former, as would help others with, such as how Officer Cerberus Langarm would work as an investigative assistant to Mathilda Grimblehawk.
