- "And Jakarta is home to the most robust black market in all the wizarding world."
- — Hermione Granger[src]
There existed a robust wizarding black market in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, which specialised in the illegal selling of magical creatures, often as babies.[1]
History[]
- "— they sell baby animals there and it's all very appalling... "
- — Hermione Granger[src]
During the Calamity in either the 2010s or the 2020s, this black market became of interest to the British Ministry of Magic and the Statute of Secrecy Task Force, when Foundables of baby beasts started manifesting. Minister Hermione Granger commented that this black market sold baby magical animals and that the conditions were appalling. Giant Squid tentacles were also sold in this black market, across Indonesia, as well as enchanted cages used to keep baby Nifflers. Hermione Granger contacted her friend Dorian Fungbury in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement to investigate illegal beast trading, and he found during the Calamity, the black market, especially the one in Jakarta, had utterly exploded in size. Thanks to this, the Ministry was able to allocate more resources to dealing with illegal black market beast trading.[1]
