"When everyone had eaten as much as they could, the remains of the food faded from the plates, leaving them sparkling clean as before. A moment later the desserts appeared. Blocks of ice cream in every flavour you could think of, apple pies, treacle tarts, chocolate eclairs and jam doughnuts, trifle, strawberries, jelly, rice pudding..."
— Description of the 1991 Welcoming Feast dessert options[src]

Jelly is a dessert made with sweetened gelatine, which was served at both the Welcoming Feast of 1991[1] and 1996.[2]

A spell could be used to transform glass into a stick jelly-like substance.[3]

Behind the scenes[]

  • In the American edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (titled "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone"), "jelly" is instead referred to as "Jell-O", which is a brand name for a specific type of gelatin marketed by the U.S.-based Kraft Foods. Though the term has passed into somewhat generic usage in the U.S. and Canada, it is not in common usage in Great Britain.[4] The term "jelly", however, would likely have confused U.S. readers, as in the United States it is normally used to refer to a fruit spread (that doesn't have any fruit pieces, peel, or the like, only the juice) for spreading on sandwiches, which in Great Britain is most commonly referred to as "jam", whether or not it has any of those pieces in it.
