John Dawlish was an Auror who was loyal to Fudge. Although Dumbledore says he is sure Dawlish is a excellent Auror, saying how he remembers him getting all Outstandings on his N.E.W.Ts, every time he is mentioned in the series it says he was cursed, confunded or in some otherways incapacitated. This has lead some to question his actual skill. However, as he is often seen as a bodyguard for the Minister for Magic himself, he cannot be totally incompetent.

When Cornelius Fudge falsely framed Dumbledore about conspiracy against the Ministry of Magic, Dawlish made an attempt to stop Dumbledore from escaping, but was easily defeated knocked out by Dumbledore's spells.

Dolores Umbridge ordered Dawlish and several other Aurors to arrest Rubeus Hagrid in order to drive him away from Hogwarts, but Dawlish was beaten again, possibly by Fang. He was assigned to tail Dumbledore a year later, however he was knocked out by Dumbledore again. He was assigned by Rufus Scrimgeour, who was very interested in where Dumbledore went. The Death Eater Yaxley wheedles information, regarding Harry Potter's departure from Number 4 Privet Drive, out of him through use of the Confundus Charm, which in turn leads to Dawlish accidentally letting Dirk Cresswell escape his grasp. He is again bested by Augusta Longbottom, after attempting to use her as leverage over Dumbledore's Army co-commander Neville Longbottom.
