Kazuhiro Shiratori,[2] also known as the white-robed wizard, was a Japanese Dark wizard and a member of R. He was a former student at Mahoutokoro in Japan, where he formerly lived.
Biography[]
Shiratori was once a student at Mahoutokoro, the wizarding school of Japan. At an unknown time, he was expelled, presumably for practising the Dark Arts.
Joining R[]
At some point, he travelled from his native Japan to England and successfully made a name for himself in the figurative underworld of wizarding Britain, and eventually even joined the dangerous organisation known as 'R'.[3]
Known to visit the street of shops and vendors specialising in the darker forms of magic in London known as Knockturn Alley on occasion, at some point in 1989, said dodgy place became the stage for a duel between Shiratori and fellow criminal Mundungus Fletcher, whom he defeated.[4]
Shiratori was eventually caught by Aurors, but before he could be sent to Azkaban, he managed to escape custody. After escaping, he pursued Jacob's sibling and Merula Snyde at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, seemingly with the intent of murdering them.[5]
Shiratori was later tasked by R to capture Jacob's sibling and bring them to the hideout of their organisation in an effort to recruit them into their ranks. Having successfully gained access to the school grounds, he was able to corner them and another student near the Great Lake, along with one of their fellow students, Beatrice Haywood.[6] Without hesitation, he cast a powerful spell on Jacob's sibling,[6] but before he could do anything else, their older brother and known adversary of R, Jacob, arrived and chased him off.[7] Following this incident, Aurors from the Ministry of Magic was dispatched to apprehend him, only for him to evade capture. He fled the Hogwarts grounds following the duel in the Forest Grove.[8]
Shiratori was caught by Alastor Moody following a skirmish in Knockturn Alley. He was later taken to the Boathouse by Moody, where he was tied to a chair with ropes so Jacob's sibling and him could interrogate him about R and its leader's identity. After he defiantly refused to divulge information to them, Moody suddenly stunned him, on the grounds of him not being useful and to make transporting him to Azkaban easier.[9]
Wizengamot trial[]
During the 1990–1991 school year, Shiratori was put on trial before the Wizengamot of the British Ministry of Magic where he was accused of attempting to assasinate Jacob's sibling in the previous year, as well as conspiring with "R" and use of the Unforgivable Curses. He was placed within a cage during his trial due to his tendency to evade getting imprisoned or captured. During his trial, he lied and denied all the accusations, but was found guilty by the Wizengamot after much long deliberation, with Chief Warlock Albus Dumbledore declaring he would be given a life sentence in Azkaban for his crimes, along with promising to do the same to other members of "R".[2]
Whilst temporarily imprisoned in the British Ministry of Magic, Shiratori told Alastor Moody and Jacob's sibling that he knew of Eustace Burke's whereabouts (a fellow R member), and promised to reveal them if his life sentence was reduced in Azkaban, fearing the Dementors there and wanting out. However Moody lacked the legal authority to make such a decision, so he went to discuss with the necessary people, after he was transported back to Azkaban.[10] He later told the Ministry he would only reveal information about 'R' on one condition: if he could tell it directly to Jacob's sibling alone from Azkaban.[11]
Azkaban[]
Moody and Jacob's sibling then travelled to Azkaban and spoke to him in the Interrogation Room, where he entered locked inside a cage which was hoisted from the ceiling into the room. He allowed Jacob's sibling to read his mind with Legilimency despite being well-versed in Occlumency, and allowed them to see that the thief they were seeking was indeed Eustace Burke, who was located at the Romanian Dragon Sanctuary.[12]
Physical description[]
Shiratori had pale skin, medium length black hair, and brown eyes. He wore his white Mahoutokoro uniform. He had a tattoo of a skeletal snake or dragon.[4]
Personality and traits[]
Shiratori appeared to be a cold-blooded and ruthless assassin. It was initially believed he intended to kill Jacob's sibling, but he claimed he was going to take them to R so they would become their next leader someday,[9] which may or may not be a lie. Shiratori was also talented at evading capture and punishment, which he did constantly and with pride, and it was likely for these reasons he was put in a cage during his trial. He was shown to be uneasy around Dementors and wanted out of Azkaban mainly to get away from them.
Magical abilities and skills[]
- Dark Arts: As a Dark wizard who worked as an assassin, he was proficient with Dark Magic. He was found guilty of having used the Unforgivable Curses in his Wizengamot trial.[2]
- Duelling: He was a skilled duellist who one point defeated Mundungus Fletcher in a duel, who attributed his victory partially to the man's unusual stance and strange incantations. Later, he was notably able to neutralise the entire guard that was supposed to bring him to Azkaban, among them some of the best Aurors under Alastor Moody's command. Upon finally encountering his target at Hogwarts, he proved quick enough to be able to incapacitate Jacob's sibling with a single spell before they got a chance to protect themselves. He was, however, unable to beat the famed Alastor Moody, who successfully was able to disarm and capture him by means of the Incarcerous Spell, binding him with robes.
- Nonverbal magic: Shiratori could cast spells without having to say them out loud, as demonstrated when he floored Jacob's sibling with a silent spell upon finally cornering them, and later in his duel with Alastor Moody.
- Occlumency: Shiratori was very well-versed in the art of Occlumency.[12]
Possessions[]
- Wand: He was in ownership of a wand, which was of unknown length, wood and core. He presumably purchased this wand from a Japanese wandmaker.
- Mahoutokoro uniform: He was given the standard uniform from Mahoutokoro when he started his education. It turned white and blank when he was expelled, but he continued to wear it anyways.
Etymology[]
Shiratori (白鳥) is Japanese for swan and may be a reference to Yoshie Shiratori, a man who was forced to testify for a murder he didn't commit before escaping from three different prisons. During his escape from the third prison he killed a farmer, and was sent to a fourth prison which he subsequently escaped from. Eventually the Japanese High Court overturned his murder charges and Shiratori was sent to a fifth prison which he stayed in willingly until he was released 13 years later.
