The Keepers were a small group of witches and wizards in the Tudor period who were devoted to guarding the secret of ancient magic.[5] The group was led by Percival Rackham and its members included Charles Rookwood, Niamh Fitzgerald, and San Bakar, all of whom were professors at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.[6][7][8]

The Keepers had an instrumental role in safeguarding the two known ancient magic repositories that existed in the world: one beneath Rookwood Castle, and another in the Keepers' Caverns beneath Hogwarts Castle. In order for a future wielder of ancient magic to access the latter, they had to undergo a series of trials to prove their worth.[3]

The Keepers dated to the Tudor period.[5] They were first seen by Isidora Morganach when they replenished her hamlet of Feldcroft from a drought.[9] Later, Isidora discovered she was able to use ancient magic, and apprenticed to Percival Rackham, although she did not become a Keeper herself.[1] The Keepers attempted to instil Isidora with their view that ancient magic should be kept secret.[2] However, she rebelled against this after creating a spell that enabled her to extract pain and negative emotions from others. She brought the Keepers to her house in Feldcroft, where she experimented this spell on her father, much to Professor Rackham's shock.[4]

In the coming years, Isidora became the professor of Defence Against the Dark Arts at the school, where she would begin a systematic process of healing the negative emotions of students. As her stores of collected ancient magic simply became too numerous, she commissioned a repository of goblin silver from Bragbor the Boastful, a goblin metalworker.[10]

The Keepers' suspicions over Isidora reached a climax when they confronted her in the Keepers' Caverns and asked her to stop her way of life. By then, Isidora was already fully set in her conviction, and was unwilling to abide by the Keepers' secrecy any longer. A duel started between the five, resulting in Isidora's death at the hands of San Bakar.[2]

After Isidora's death, the Keepers decided that they would not allow another person to understand their secrets without completing their personal trials, not wanting to have her mistakes repeated. They constructed Vault 12, a highly secretive vault at Gringotts Wizarding Bank, and designed an elaborate series of steps in order to access it.[11] They also built the Map Chamber beneath Hogwarts Castle, which served as a home for their portraits and as a gateway to the Keepers' Caverns below.[3]

The Keepers' portraits were apparently more sentient than most, as they were capable of rational, independent thought, and could manipulate the Map Chamber.[3]

Ranrok's goblin rebellion[]

In 1890, the portraits were introduced to a new fifth-year student who shared Rackham's and Isidora's gifts of ancient magic, and sent the student to take part in the Keepers' trials to make them understand the reponsibility of guarding the repositories.
