The Keepers' Caverns were an underground cave network beneath Hogwarts Castle. They could be accessed through a concealed door below the Map Chamber. A deeper chamber within the Caverns, protected by two large, ancient magic sentries, housed the final repository, a store of ancient magic constructed by Isidora Morganach and Bragbor in the Tudor era.

History

15th-16th century

In the 15th–16th century, Isidora Morganach, a Professor at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, used the Caverns to hold the final repository. This was a store of corrupted ancient magic in the form of 'emotions' and 'pain' that she had extracted from the school's students, constructed by Bragbor. When her activities—and the Caverns—were discovered by the Keepers, Percival Rackham, Niamh Fitzgerald, Charles Rookwood, and San Bakar, they urged her to stop. When she refused, a duel broke out between them, resulting in Isidora's death at the hands of San Bakar.

Following this, the Caverns were shut by the Keepers, forever locked beneath the map in the Map Chamber. The Keepers swore that they would only open it to an individual who possessed the gift of ancient magic, but understood the power and responsibility that they wielded.

Ranrok's invasion

In 1891, Ranrok, a goblin rebel and Bragbor's descendant, invaded the Caverns by drilling into Hogwarts's foundations, in his quest to unlock the final repository. A battle ensued within the Caverns between the defending forces of Hogwarts and the invaders. Although successful in releasing the power of the final repository, Ranrok was defeated by an unidentified student, resulting in his demise. The Repository was possibly rebuilt afterwards.
