- "There is no value in caring for beasts, only selling them."
- — Kellen to a Hogwarts student[src]
Kellen Carrion[4] was a Muggle-born[1] wizard poacher who Long Shouren worked for before the 2010s.
Biography[]
Early life[]
In his youth, Kellen attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry where he was sorted into Ravenclaw House. He left Hogwarts prior to his seventh year.[1]
Early activities[]
At some point, Kellen formed a group of wizard poachers. As their boss, they illegally poached magical beasts. When Long Shouren left his village in China at the age of seventeen to travel the world, he met Kellen and impressed him with his knowledge of dragons. At first, Shouren did not know that Kellen and his group were poachers. He was unhappy once he realised and after years of begrudgingly helping, he decided to leave.[3]
However, Kellen told Shouren that he owed them so he could not leave until he helped steal a dragon egg. Shouren agreed but only so he could get the egg and flee with it in order to protect it from his boss and his group. They chased him while he tried to run but gave up and abandoned him for dead when the mother of the egg, a huge dragon, arrived. Shouren survived the attack.[3]
Working with the Ministry[]
In the early 2010s, Kellen was working with the British Ministry of Magic (but not for them), where he had powerful friends who protected him. He was asked to help investigate the recent theft of three dragon eggs. He suspected Long Shouren was involved and tracked him down to Hogwarts where he was helping to teach Care of Magical Creatures. He arrived during a lesson taught by Rubeus Hagrid. They talked to a student about the theft, who disagreed with him that Shouren was a thief. Kellen figured out they were involved because they smelled like a hatchling.[4]
When Hagrid interrupted, Kellen asked him to let Shouren know he wanted to talk to him. Hagrid agreed but thought he was a "strange fella". Kellen later met up with his poaching group, including Qui LeBlanc in the Forbidden Forest.[4] They waited in the forest for the student to bring dragon eggs to Shouren. Kellen hid near Hagrid's Hut where he saw the student with a baby dragon. He tampered with the Dragon Paddock, freeing the Antipodean Opaleye within it, so he could talk to the student without Hagrid there.[5]
They confronted the student about the baby dragon, calling Shouren a liar and demanding they give him the dragon. The dragon was getting upset and they told Kellen she didn't appear to like him. He replied that he felt the same way about her. The student refused to let him have the dragon which started to make Kellen angry. Hagrid returned and confronted him. Kellen tried to tell him they were helping a criminal but Hagrid responded that Kellen was the criminal. He threatened Hagrid, pointing out that he had powerful friends at the Ministry but so did Hagrid.[5]
Kellen attacked the duo during which the dragon flew away. Hagrid held Kellen off while the student chased her. Kellen escaped Hagrid and tracked down the student and dragon. They thought they were brave like Shouren. They replied that Shouren had changed and was a good person but Kellen pointed out that they were a thief now that Shouren had involved them in his illegal activities. He demanded they hand over the dragon or face the consquences. They tried to subdue Kellen with the Stunning Spell but he managed to get back up. However, Shouren appeared when Kellen told them that there was no value in caring for beasts.[5]
He told Kellen that he didn't use to think like that, and that he used to be fond of them. Kellen agreed that he did a long time ago but he paid for it with flesh and blood. Shouren responded that Kellen taught him the innocent shouldn't pay for their mistakes which made him very angry. He shouted at Shouren that he taught him many things but he still betrayed him. Shouren tried to appeal to Kellen to change like he had, but he thought it was pointless and told Shouren to get the student to hand over the hatchling.[5]
When they refused, he challenged Shouren to a duel, telling him he had never been beaten before. Shouren defeated Kellen and then spared his life. Shouren told him he did so because he thought anyone could change, even him. Kellen had to face telling the Ministry what he had been up to. Shouren thought he wouldn't be able to continue working with the Ministry. Though his villainy was revealed, it is unknown what happened to Kellen after that.[5]
Physical description[]
Kellen was a very large wizard with "goat-like features".[1] In his youth, he had light brown hair. In the 2010s, he had long grey hair.[4] He was often mistaken for a werewolf. He had a deep, resonating voice.[1]
Personality and traits[]
Kellen was a focused wizard who was quick to anger, though he wished he was not. He disliked human companionship and preferred to be alone. He could be rather depressing with one of his dislikes being laughter. Kellen liked being mistaken for a werewolf because he could use it to his advantage. His hobbies included building cages and contraptions, flight and studying birds.[1]
