This kelpie lived in the Magical Creatures Reserve in the 1980s.[1]

Biography[]

In the 1980s, Jacob's sibling would often bond with and feed this kelpie.[1]

During the 1986–1987 school year, this kelpie's owner attempted to ride it before it had been properly tamed, resulting in it attempting to drown and eat him. Although the owner managed to survive, he decided to donate the kelpie to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the hope that it would find a happier home there. In an attempt to tame the kelpie to ensure it didn't attempt to eat anyone at Hogwarts, Rubeus Hagrid contacted Jacob's sibling and introduced them to this kelpie at the Lake in the Magical Creatures Reserve, informing them of the situation. Hagrid warned them to avoid attempting to ride the kelpie for the time being, lamenting that the creature couldn't help what was in its nature but acknowledging that it was currently dangerous to be around.[1]

Knowing Jacob's sibling's way with magical creatures, Hagrid suggested that Jacob's sibling should attempt to bond with this kelpie so that it could safely reside in the Magical Creatures Reserve without harming anyone, to which they agreed. Hagrid hinted that, if the bonding was successful, this kelpie might let Jacob's sibling ride them safely, admitting that he was too large to ride one but that he would be rooting for Jacob's sibling from the shore if they ever got the chance. Hagrid claimed that being able to ride this kelpie safely would indicate that the creature was safe enough to remain at Hogwarts.[1]

Jacob's sibling travelled to the Black Lake to research kelpies, along with Nymphadora Tonks, who decided to join them upon hearing that the Magical Creatures Reserve had a new kelpie, as Hagrid claimed that his kelpie knowledge was "a bit rusty". Upon their arrival, this kelpie suddenly appeared in the Black Lake, surprising Jacob's sibling, who wondered how the kelpie had managed to enter the lake. Tonks theorised that the lake's waters might be connected to the Magical Creatures Reserve while Jacob's sibling commented that, although they were glad the kelpie had enough room to roam in the Black Lake, its ability to access an area populated by Hogwarts students meant they needed to tame it as quickly as possible before it attempted to drown and eat someone.[1]

Tonks claimed that Hagrid had also warned her to avoid trying to ride the kelpie while it was still wild, being somewhat disappointed that she would be unable to ride the creature. Jacob's sibling revealed to her that being able to ride a kelpie was the surest sign that it had been tamed, with Tonks excitedly hoping to tame this kelpie quickly so that they could both ride it. Tonks claimed that she had brought every book about kelpies she could find in the Hogwarts Library to the lake with her, with her and Jacob's sibling deciding to read through them to see what they could learn about kelpies. While reading, the pair discovered that a kelpie could be tamed by putting a bridle over its head, rendering it harmless and preventing it from trying to drown anyone.[1]

Jacob's sibling suggested that they needed to either find themselves a bridle or make one, with Tonks being confused about why they would decide to make a new bridle. Jacob's sibling explained that this kelpie was a special creature and thus deserved a special bridle, deciding to contact Andre Egwu to help make a bridle that would be both stylish and functional. After Andre had constructed a new bridle for this kelpie from a special material that emulated the bulrush mane of a kelpie, Jacob's sibling and this kelpie met up with him at the Boathouse. Andre claimed that his nearly finished bridle should be sturdy enough to be able to withstand the kelpie's power while remaining fashionable enough to hold up against any trend. However, Andre explained that he was worried that the bridle might be uncomfortable for the kelpie if it wasn't fitted properly, desiring to take the creature's measurements in order to ensure maximum comfort. Jacob's sibling suggested that they could call this kelpie over so that Andre could measure it, being surprised that Andre was so comfortable with being near the potentially dangerous kelpie. Andre explained that style was always risky and that he was comfortable due to having Jacob's sibling there to protect him if needed. Jacob's sibling called this kelpie over and, having begun to form a bond with it, attempted to keep it occupied while Andre took its measurements, although they warned him to avoid touching the still wild beast.[1]

After acquiring this kelpie's correct measurements, Andre finished the bridle and gave it to Jacob's sibling to attempt to put it on this kelpie. However, when Jacob's sibling approached this kelpie with the bridle, it suddenly swam away from them. Andre lamented that the bridle wasn't this kelpie's style after all, but Jacob's sibling reassured him that style wasn't the problem and they they should've known that it would be difficult to put a bridle on this kelpie. Jacob's sibling decided that they should inform Hagrid about the current situation in the hope that he might be able to help.[1]

Jacob's sibling met up with Hagrid and this kelpie on the shores of the Black Lake, informing him of the current situation. After being informed that they were unable to affix a bridle to this kelpie's head, Hagrid claimed that trying to force a bridle onto the creature's head could be dangerous before offering to help Jacob's sibling brainstorm potential methods of placing a bridle onto this kelpie. Hagrid suggested that it might be helpful to talk to someone with more kelpie experience than he had, to which Jacob's sibling realised that there was a kelpie in the Hippogriff Clubhouse, with the two hoping that someone in the Hippogriff Club might know how best to safely get a bridle onto a kelpie's head.[1]

Jacob's sibling met up with Tonks, Penny Haywood, Barnaby Lee, and the Hippogriff Club's kelpie in the Hippogriff Clubhouse and informed them of the situation. Tonks revealed that Penny had dug up the Hippogriff Club's old records in an attempt to help, with the group hoping that something within the records could provide a clue about how to put a bridle on a kelpie. After a brief discussion about what each member of the group admired most about kelpies in order to better understand their relationships with the creatures, Jacob's sibling noticed that the Hippogriff Club's kelpie seemed much gentler than this kelpie. Barnaby claimed that the kelpie had been in the clubhouse longer than anyone could remember, with Penny suspecting that it had been tamed for so long that it no longer needed to wear a bridle anymore, with the group hoping that the same would be true of this kelpie someday.[1]

After examining the club's records, Penny determined that past Hippogriff Club members had once used a particular charm to place a bridle on the club's kelpie, with Jacob's sibling also noticing an association between the Placement Charm and kelpies in the records. The group believed that the Placement Charm was the spell used by the past Hippogriff Club, although Tonks recalled that none of them had learned how to use the spell. Barnaby suggested that Jacob's sibling could learn the spell from the Sphinx Club, but Jacob's sibling instead decided to learn the Placement Charm directly from the source: Charms professor Filius Flitwick.[1]

Jacob's sibling met with Flitwick in the Charms Classroom between classes and informed him of the situation, convincing Flitwick to teach them the Placement Charm early in order to help this kelpie. After successfully managing to use the Placement Charm to place a top hat on a training dummy, Flitwick claimed that they were finally ready to try to use the charm to place the bridle on this kelpie. After being informed about what was driving Jacob's sibling to tame this kelpie, Flitwick wished them luck but reminded them that placing the bridle on this kelpie wouldn't be enough to tame the creature without a powerful bond of friendship. Upon being reassured of the strong bond between Jacob's sibling and this kelpie, Flitwick asked Jacob's sibling to inform him when it was time to place the bridle on this kelpie, desiring to watch the spectacle himself.[1]

Jacob's sibling returned to the shores of the Black Lake to place the bridle onto this kelpie, being observed by Hagrid, Tonks, Andre, Penny, Barnaby, and Flitwick. Being reassured that Hagrid and Flitwick were there to protect them from this kelpie if anything went wrong, Jacob's sibling approached this kelpie and successfully used the Placement Charm to place the bridle on the creature's head. The newly tamed kelpie allowed Jacob's sibling to hop onto its back and ride it around the lake, much to the amazement of the watching audience on the shore. After disembarking from this kelpie, Hagrid congratulated Jacob's sibling for being able to tame and ride the creature, with Jacob's sibling claiming that they couldn't have done it without the help of everyone in the audience. Hagrid claimed that he was glad to see Jacob's sibling and this kelpie enjoying themselves before pronouncing this kelpie as fully tamed and safe to remain at the Magical Creatures Reserve. Jacob's sibling asserted that they were glad that the creature's spirited nature remained intact, claiming that no bridle could take that away. Hagrid claimed that creatures had to be true to themselves just like people before commending Jacob's sibling for helping another magical creature find a loving home at Hogwarts.[1]
