This kelpie appeared in the Great Lake at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry during the 2010–2011 school year and was involved in Elspeth MacGillony's quest for the crown of courage.[1]
Biography[]
During the 2010–2011 school year, before Elspeth MacGillony arrived at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry to take up the job of Study of Ancient Runes professor, this kelpie appeared in the Great Lake, which was noted to be a rare occurrence. As MacGillony wanted to obtain a magical crown at the bottom of the lake, but was afraid of the kelpie, she put the Imperius Curse on several students to make them attempt to retrieve it for her. Meanwhile, the presence of something unfamiliar in the lake became well known, and many of the cursed students saw the kelpie when they went into the lake, with some believing it was the kelpie that dragged them in.[1]

An unidentified student who was not cursed by MacGillony decided to do their own investigation and went near the kelpie. It turned out that the kelpie was afraid of the humans, and certainly didn't have the intent to hurt them. The kelpie fulfilled the student's desire by leading them down into the lake and see for themself what was happening. Together, they witnessed Daniel Page examining a chest in which the magical crown was stored.[1]

Back onto the surface, when Professor MacGillony came and attempted to use the crown that Daniel had brought out of the lake, the kelpie interrupted her with water jets. This sparked a duel between MacGillony and the students. When she blasted the unidentified student into the lake, the kelpie caught them and leapt from the water to defend them. MacGillony, who had become unafraid of it anymore, pointed her wand at it, but was incarcerated by Professor McGonagall shortly after.[1]

After the professors left, the kelpie watched quietly in the lake when students talked about the incident with Rubeus Hagrid, who had always believed in the kelpie's friendliness. It allowed the unidentified student to ride it, and would stay their friend from then on.[1]
