Kirley McCormack Duke[8] (b. 1971) was a British wizard and the lead guitarist for the popular band The Weird Sisters.
Biography[]
Kirley was the son of Quidditch player Catriona McCormack and the brother of Meaghan McCormack. Both women played for the Pride of Portree.[6] Kirley attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry[8] from 1983 to 1989.[2] He later joined the Weird Sisters as one of its first three members. He was part of the band when they approached Jacob's sibling to ask them to join them for their first ever concert. Throughout the preparation and during the concert he didn't speak much, but when Jacob's sibling untransfigured a black quill that Myron had been holding onto, he spoke up for the first time in Jacob's sibling's presence, offering his insight as to the quill's origin and the message that it contained.[8] He would continue to play with the band throughout their school career, including at the Party at the Burrow and the Weird Sisters concert at the Great Lake.
Physical description[]
Kirley wore a dress shirt and a metal necklace. He would also wear black lipstick and faint eyeshadow.[8] On his Chocolate Frog Card he wore a pink ballgown dress and had grown a short beard.
Personality and traits[]
- "He [Kirley] lets his music do the talking."
- — Myron Wagtail to Jacob's sibling[src]
Kirley was a man of few words.[9] However, when he spoke up, it was always with keen insight and thought. By his own admission, he loved mysteries and rarely smiled, but still participated in the Weird Sisters' ritual of casting the Cheering Charm on each other before a concert.[8]
Magical abilities and skills[]
- Charms: Kirley was capable of producing a non-corporeal Patronus,[7] which is a highly impressive magical achievement, given the difficulty of casting the charm.
- Guitar playing: Kirley was an accomplished guitarist, able to play a three-necked guitar with ease. He had practiced for years before the band's first concert.[8]
Possessions[]
- Guitar: Kirley owned a guitar, which was confiscated by Argus Filch in the 1989–1990 school year, which was retrieved by Jacob's sibling and returned to him.[9] He used this guitar to play at numerous events, such as the concert at the Great Lake,[9] the party at the Three Broomsticks Inn[10] and the Yule Ball.[11]
Etymology[]
A "Duke" is a nobleman with the highest hereditary rank, especially a man of the highest grade of the peerage in Great Britain.
Behind the scenes[]
- Kirley Duke was portrayed by Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead in the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
- Kirley's appearance as depicted in the video games differs. In his Famous Wizard Card appearance from the first two video games, he is depicted as blond, but in Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery, he is depicted as dark-haired (which is based on his depiction in the fourth film).
- It is unknown why Kirley has a different surname than his mother and sister. It may be that he has a different father or that his sister was born out of wedlock.
