Harry sees the fight in 5th year and learns and uses the curse in 6th year, and clearly doesn't think they are the same spell, and doesn't realize that Snape invented the curse until the end of the book. The curse is invisible and soundless, while the spell used against James Potter appeared as a flash of light. Harry witnessed the fight in 5th year, and learned the spell in 6th year, and there was no indication that he thought that they were the same spell (the effects are self evidently different, more similar to a severing charm: https://harrypotter.fandom.com/wiki/Severing_Charm), indeed he didn't know it was something invented by Snape until the end of the book. Since he would have been the first in history to use it, it must also have been well-known that he invented the spell.
