- "This is the most complicated potion I've ever seen. Lacewing flies, leeches, fluxweed, and knotgrass. Well, they're easy enough."
- — Hermione Granger on the ingredients of the Polyjuice Potion[src]
Lacewing flies, or just lacewings, are small green insects named for their large, transparent, laced wings. Lacewing flies were sold at the Magical Menagerie.[1] Lacewing flies were an ingredient used in the Polyjuice Potion, where they must be stewed for twenty-one days.[2] Lacewing flies were not on the Restricted Register.
History[]
In late 1992, Hermione Granger stewed some lacewing flies in order to brew the Polyjuice Potion in her second year.[2]
In 2020, some Lacewing flies appeared to be missing from the Hogwarts Potions stores.[3]
Behind the scenes[]
- The use of lacewing flies in the Polyjuice Potion was chosen by J. K. Rowling to represent "an intertwining or binding together of two identities", as suggested by the word "lace" in the name.[4]
