- — Eleazar Fig and George Osric discussing the rarity of a late-blooming student's condition[src]
Late-bloomer is a conjectural term for a wizard or witch whose magical ability did not manifest until their adolescence or adulthood, which was well after the usual age agreed by experts. This was a very rare occurrence,[1] as most experts in the wizarding world agreed that a witch or wizard's magic manifested, if present, by age seven.[2]
Out of the three known examples of late-bloomers, they were all accepted into Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in their fifth year at the age of fifteen. They also all had an ability to use ancient magic, which was perhaps linked to late-blooming.[3]

Behind the scenes[]
- J. K. Rowling revealed in a March 1999 webchat that she planned to include a character who "does manage in desperate circumstances to do magic quite late in life" in the series.[1] However, in 2007, she revealed that she had changed her mind about including this character (who was supposed to find their way to Hogwarts despite never performing magic previously) by the time she had finished writing Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.[5]
- It was once speculated that Petunia Dursley was the character intended to show magical powers late in life. Rowling, however, has confirmed that Petunia is definitely a Muggle.[6]
