Lavinia Fortescue was a witch and a member of the wizarding Fortescue family who was a student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the 2010s.[3]
Biography[]
Lavinia was born into the wizarding Fortescue family. As it ran in her family, she was fascinated with history and loved to preserve the pieces and fragments of what once was. At age eleven, she began attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and was Sorted into an unknown House.[3]
At some point in the 2010s, while she was still a student, she came across a set of notes left by her late distant relative Florean Fortescue. Even though she had never met him, she felt genuinely curious about them. However, some slips fell out while she was carrying them around Diagon Alley and Hogwarts. The notes were found by a Muggle-born student, with Lavinia leaving additional notes around for them to find when she realised they were "the type", curious and fascinated with history, just like her and her family. Lavinia and the student later met at the Hogwarts Library, where they talked about the notes and preserving history.[3]
Etymology[]
Lavinia is a feminine Roman name of Latin origin, meaning "legendary mother of the Roman people". In Roman mythology, Lavinia was the wife of Aeneas, an ancestor of Romulus and Remus. It also means "from the ancient town of Lavinium", and, according to Roman legend, Aeneas later named the Italian town of Lavinium in honour of his wife.[4]

But Lavinia mentions never meeting Florean, changing her earliest year of birth to the summer of 1996. While she may still have been born in 1994 but never met Florean, as he was only a distant relative of hers, her birthdate is most likely after 1996. The story that includes her might be happening during the event of the Of Sweets and Shadows season in the 2011–2012 school year, making her latest year of birth 2000.
