The Leaving Feast,[1] also known as the end-of-year feast[2] or the end-of-term feast,[3] was a traditional part of the school year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, held in the Great Hall.[2]
History[]
The Great Hall decorated with Slytherin colours in 1992, before additional points were awarded to Gryffindor
It occurred on the last night of the term and had almost exactly the same dishes as the ones served at the Start-of-Term Feast. This Feast was notable for including the awarding of the House Cup to the house with the highest House points. The house that won the House Cup would have the Great Hall decorated in their house colours.[2] Although most of these feasts are very happy and exciting times, at the end of the 1994–1995 school year, the Leaving Feast was subdued because of the death of Hufflepuff student Cedric Diggory.[1]
Behind the scenes[]
- As the Leaving Feast is never mentioned in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, it is possible that the feast to celebrate the end of the plot to open the Chamber of Secrets replaced the Leaving Feast in the 1992–1993 school year, even though it took place a month before the end of the year. The fact that Gryffindor were stated during it to have won the House Cup supports this.
- In the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, most of the students are depicted as rising and applauding Hagrid after Harry Potter states that there's no Hogwarts without him. Some of the members of Slytherin house remain seated, including Snape, but the notoriously slow-witted Crabbe rises and begins to applaud, until Malfoy stops him.
