"As long as there have been Lees, there's been the Lee Family Toast"
Barnaby Lee[src]

The Lee Family Toast was a once in a generation gathering of the Lee family, where the entire extended Lee family got together to celebrate. The tradition went back generations.[1]

Role of the Toast Giver[]

"If I don't give the Lee Family Toast with precision, inspiration, and enthusiasm, we could get cursed!"
Barnaby Lee[src]

The youngest Lee family member of a suitable age was designated the 'Toast Giver', and had to give a speech in front of the whole family. The speech comprised of several verses which honoured each family member, which altogether told the story of the Lee family. In addition, the Toast Giver had to compose new verses for each new family member. To aid them in their duties, they could invite a guest along. Every verse that previous Toast Givers had composed was recorded in a Book of Toast Giver verses that the Toast Giver would memorise and perfectly recite.[1]

Toast Giver curse[]

The Toast Giver and their guest had to recite the speech perfectly, as failure to recite the speech properly would trigger a curse and cause the Lee family to have three generations of bad luck. Cecil Lee's great-grandfather once missed a single syllable when reciting the speech and the curse was triggered. However, Barnaby's grandmother revealed that there was no such curse placed on the Lee Family Toast, remarking that it sounded like the kind of thing that Barnaby's father would make up to scare him. Despite this, she also commented that some curses didn't need to be cast to take effect.[1]

Role of the Toast Giver's guest[]

If the Toast Giver failed to remember one of the verses, the Toast Giver's guest could complete it for them, provided they had memorised the verse themselves. Additionally, at the end of the Toast the Toast Giver's guest had to recite a verse about the Toast Giver themselves.[1]

History[]

Barnaby Lee's father's Toast[]

In the generation before Barnaby Lee, his father gave the Toast. According to his own mother, he performed the Toast flawlessly, however his sister Leah thought it wasn't very good.[1]

1986–1987 school year[]

During this year, Barnaby Lee was appointed the Toast Giver, but was nervous about the role. As the Toast Giver was allowed to bring a guest to help with Toast-Giving duties, they invited Jacob's sibling along to help them. Barnaby and Jacob's sibling managed to convince Leah Lee to come as she wasn't originally planning on attending. Jacob's sibling helped Barnaby with memorising the verses and composing new ones on the way down. They ended up meeting Barnaby Lee's grandmother in the Leaky Cauldron instead of the Lee family house since Vulcan had accidentally set fire to the parlour. Before the Toast, Barnaby Lee's grandmother sent Jacob's sibling and Barnaby to collect various things they needed for the Toast such as crystal glassware and Butterbeer 1900, as well as to get new formal outfits. After collecting the things needed, Jacob's sibling and Barnaby helped break up some arguments amongst the family members, but as the landlady of the Leaky Cauldron wouldn't let Barnaby's grandmother rent out the entire pub for the day, she stormed off. Jacob's sibling went after her and managed to convince her to continue holding the Toast, but with a crowd watching. Barnaby managed to recite the verses perfectly, and his grandmother was highly impressed.[1]
