Letters were a primary means of communication in the wizarding world, often delivered by owls, which were commonly used as postal carriers.[1]
Description[]
Letters were crucial in communication within the wizarding world, serving as the primary means of long-distance correspondence among witches and wizards. Unlike Muggles' letters, which relied on postal services, wizards' were typically delivered by owls, a highly efficient and secure method.[2]
These letters ranged from messages between friends and family to formal notices from institutions such as the Ministry of Magic or Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.[3][4][5] Some letters also contained magical properties, such as Howlers, which amplified the sender's voice in a loud and often scolding manner.[6]
History[]
In 1991, Hogwarts acceptance letters to Harry Potter were repeatedly intercepted by his uncle, Vernon Dursley, forcing the school to send an overwhelming number of letters until Rubeus Hagrid personally delivered one.[3][7]
In 1995, Dolores Umbridge, appointed by the British Ministry of Magic as the Hogwarts High Inquisitor, enforced strict control over student communication, inspecting all outgoing and incoming mail to prevent resistance against her authority. This act, along with her other restrictions, heightened tensions among students.[8]
