The Levitation Charm
Levitation was the magical ability to make targeted objects fly.[1] It was described by Filius Flitwick, Charms Master at Hogwarts School, as one of a wizard's "most rudimentary skills".[2]
Spells used for levitation[]
- "Essential Tip # 1: If you choose to have a meal at a table that has been levitated (as many beginning students do), it is wise to also levitate one's chair."
- — Tips on casting the Levitation Spell, Cast-a-Spell handbook[src]
Objects could be made to levitate with the use of the Levitation Charm,[1][3][4] the Levitation Spell,[5][6] the Hover Charm,[7] the Flying charm,[8] the Locomotion Charm,[9] the Pack Charm,[9][10] the Floating Charm,[3] the Rocket Charm,[3] as well as the Dangling Jinx,[11][12] Mobiliarbus,[13] and Mobilicorpus.[14]
The Limbo Mist was a mysterious golden mist that floated a few feet above the ground, that reversed gravity, making individuals caught in the mist feeling as though they were hanging upside down. It was used in the Triwizard Maze of the 1994–1995 Triwizard Tournament at Hogwarts.[15] There existed an anticharm for this enchantment.[16]
Unsupported flight was a rare magical ability in which a wizard or witch could fly without the use of a broomstick or other means of transport. Lord Voldemort was known to have invented a version of this spell to allow himself to fly without support,[17] an ability he taught his followers as well.[18] His daughter Delphini also possessed this ability.[19] In ancient wizarding times, no spell was discovered which allowed a witch or wizard to fly without support, although wizards sought to achieve this, not content with hovering a few feet above the ground.[20]
Spells for levitation had the unfortunate side-effect of causing Levitation sickness, similar to motion sickness.[21]
Bewitched objects capable of levitation[]
Numerous objects could be enchanted to fly. Broomsticks were enchanted to fly by wizards with Flying charms for the purpose of magical transportation or playing broom games such as Quidditch.[20]
The various balls used in Quidditch, such as the Bludger and the Golden Snitch were enchanted to fly.[1]
Fizzing Whizzbees were magical sweets containing Billywig stings as an ingredient, which made the consumer float a few inches off the ground. They sold in wizarding sweet shops, such as Honeydukes in Hogsmeade.[13]
The Flying Ford Anglia was a Muggle light-blue car that was enchanted to fly by Arthur Weasley, a known Muggle-enthusiast, much to the annoyance of his wife Molly.[22]
Flying carpets were carpets enchanted to fly that were utilised as wizarding transport across Asia. They were popular in Asian countries such as India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Iran and Mongolia. They were much more comfortable than broomsticks and could comfortably seat numerous passengers and their luggage, but had the disadvantage of being much colder to ride, not providing any protection from the elements.[23] However, flying carpets were banned in Great Britain by the British Ministry of Magic when it was deemed they fell under the Registry of Proscribed Charmable Objects, making it illegal to charm or fly carpets.[24]
Other vehicles could be charmed to fly. Sirius Black owned a motorbike that was enchanted to fly, which was used by Rubeus Hagrid to transport a baby Harry Potter to 4 Privet Drive on 1 November 1981.[25] It was later flown by Hagrid during the Battle of the Seven Potters.[17]
Floating golden lantern were portable lighting devices used to illuminate broad areas, often as decoration for weddings.[26]
The Great Hall of Hogwarts Castle contained floating candles which covered the entire ceiling.[27]
Winged Keys were used by Filius Flitwick in the 1991–1992 school year at Hogwarts as one of the protections for Philosopher's Stone in the Underground Chambers.[28]
Interdepartmental memos were flying letters used at the British Ministry of Magic to communicate between various departments.[29]
Anti Gravity Hats were magical hats sold at Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes in Diagon Alley, that had been in the past used for Muggle-baiting.[30]
An orrery was an astronomical model of the solar system that could be enchanted to float in mid-air. Sybill Trelawney used one of these in a fourth-year Divination lesson at Hogwarts while teaching astrology, allowing her to show her students the movements of floating planets.[31]
A Levioso Statue was a magical statue that depicted a wizard levitating a ball. When the Levitation Spell was cast on one, the ball would float higher.[6]
Levitation socks were socks capable of levitating the wearer that were available at Gladrags Wizardwear in Hogsmeade.[32]
Other magical items capable of flying were winged catapults[33] and Fanged Frisbees.[34]
Magical education[]
Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry taught first-year students the basics of how to fly brooms in Flying class, which included mounting, summoning brooms and lift-off and landing.[35] Students in Charms class were taught various charms for levitation, such as the Levitation Charm in their first-year. They would practise the charm on feathers.[1][4]
In the late 19th century at Hogwarts, the Charms Master Abraham Ronen devised a classroom game called Levitation Lesson, which encouraged students to levitate blocks through raised hoops or similar.[6]
Other uses[]
The Space Chamber was a room in the Department of Mysteries of the British Ministry of Magic which contained floating planetary models, with visitors finding themselves floating in mid-air.[36]
A wizard from Nepal was known to have grown gravity-resistant trees, which was recorded in Goshawk's Guide to Herbology.[37]
Gliding was an ability possessed by various magical creatures (and wizards) which allowed them to float slightly above the ground with limited distance at walking speed.[38][39]
