Lumos

The Wand-Lighting Charm, a ground-breaking light-creation spell

Light-creation spells[1] were a family of spells used primarily to create light in various forms.[1]

History[]

In the early days of wizarding history, light was provided via the use of various spells to project light from somewhere, or via an enchanted object such as a magic lantern. The invention of the Wand-Lighting Charm (Lumos) in 1772, which provided a strong light directly from the wand's tip, was a revolution in the manner of light-creation spells.[1]

In The Wizard and the Hopping Pot in The Tales of Beedle the Bard, it is described that the Wizard lit his wand,[2] which may suggest that Lumos and other wand-lighting spells had been part of fairy tales before they were invented in real life.
