During the 1930s, Liu Tao campaigned for the position of Supreme Mugwump of the International Confederation of Wizards - the highest office in the wizarding world. He was opposed in this ambition by Vicência Santos and Gellert Grindelwald who also aspired to the title. He eventually lost this campaign to Vicência Santos.[1]
History[]
Liu Tao ran his campaign in the 1930s against Gellert Grindelwald and Vicência Santos.[2]
Behind the scenes[]
- The campaign banners can be briefly glimpsed in the film's first official trailer, bearing his name in Chinese that read "堅決支持劉洮選為國際魔術協會主席".[3] It can be translated to: "Firmly support Liu Tao's election as president of the International Magic Association". However, the words on the banners are changed in the second trailer, reading "堅決支持劉洮選為國際魔法協會會長".
- This is written in traditional Chinese, as simplified Chinese was not used until the 1950s, while the film is set in the 1930s.
- It is noteworthy that "International Confederation of Wizards" has been translated to "國際巫師聯合會" in traditional Chinese translations of the Harry Potter books, while "國際魔術協會" translates literally to "International Association of Magic Tricks", due to "魔術" often referring to the illusions that Muggle magicians perform, rather than real magic done by witches and wizards. "Supreme Mugwump" is also often translated as "會長" instead of "主席". Both problems are addressed in the second trailer, with "魔法" referring to the magic in the wizarding world, though not being a direct translation of "Wizards". However, in some scenes of the film, it is still translated as "魔術".
