Long Shouren (Chinese: 龙守仁)[4] was a Chinese pure-blood wizard and a dragonologist in the early 21st century.[1]

Biography[]

Early life[]

Young Long Shouren

Shouren when he was a child

Shouren grew up around dragons in a small mountain village in China, with a family who had pledged to protect them. When he was growing up, he viewed caring for the dragons as a burden. He loved dragons, but yearned to travel the world.

He left home when he was 17 and met a group of travellers who were impressed with his knowledge on dragons and he accepted their invite to join their group. However, he soon learned they were actually wizard poachers who collected magical beasts. Shouren was unhappy with this and wanted to leave but he was forced to help by his boss, Kellen Carrion, who told him he owed them. Before he let Shouren leave, he demanded that he help steal a dragon egg.[2]

Shouren managed to get the dragon egg but he couldn't bring himself to give it to the poachers. When he tried to flee with the egg, his former partners chased him until the mother of the egg, a giant dragon, turned up. They abandoned him for dead but when the dragon breathed fire on him, the egg absorbed most of it. Even though he lost his arm, he survived the attack. He considered it a fair price to pay after he had helped poachers and vowed never to let another dragon get hurt.[2] After this, he had to wear a prosthetic arm. During his adventures, he had realised that dragons are a gift and chose to be a dragonologist. He continued to travel the world to find dragons. At some point, he met and befriended Rubeus Hagrid. He thought that anyone who chose to fight a dragon had made a very bad choice.[5]

Teaching at Hogwarts[]

In the early 2010s, Shouren visited Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry to help Hagrid teach classes about dragons, where they built a Dragon Paddock. He stayed in a tent outside of Hagrid's Hut. During his first lesson, he met a student who he recognised had an affinity for dragons. He Apparated with the student to Diagon Alley where they observed two Dark wizards illegally trading three dragon eggs. He put the Disillusionment Charm on them so they could rescue the eggs successfully, and Disapparated with them before being caught by a Dark wizard.[5] Shouren was grateful for their help but asked them not to tell anyone, even Hagrid, that they had the eggs. He wanted the student to keep the eggs in their care and have them care for them until he could move them to a place where they would be safe.[2]

The student took Shouren to the Room of Requirement where they thought the eggs would be hidden. Shouren told them how to identify the eggs and that they should be cared for differently depending on their species. After putting them in cauldrons, they kept them lit with the Fire-Making Spell. However, after he left, Colby Frey revealed to the student that he overheard everything. He told the student that they had actually taken the eggs illegally because the wizards in Diagon Alley were sanctioned by the Ministry of Magic to trade them. They broke into Shouren's Tent to try and find out if Shouren was still a poacher.[2]

Shouren returned while they were reading his journal. He revealed that he was against even the Ministry-sanctioned trades and stole the eggs to protect them. He told the student, who was worried that they had broken the law, that they had done nothing wrong. They agreed with Colby to help care for the eggs until Shouren could take them somewhere else.[2]

Shouren secured a home for two of the eggs before they hatched. However, when he returned to the Room of Requirement, the egg containing a Chinese Fireball had hatched. The hatchling was already being cared for by the student and Colby, but he told them baby dragons were a handful. After telling them the dragon was a female, he told them it will be harder for him to find her home now that she had hatched and until he does, they would have to keep caring for her. Colby wanted to keep her there for her safety, but Shouren told him they can't because she would grow and it would be too dangerous.[6]

Shouren was later shocked to learn that his former boss, Kellen, was helping the Ministry investigate the theft of the dragon eggs. Kellen told the student that Shouren was the real poacher but he denied it when they confronted him. Shouren persuaded them to keep helping him and prepared to talk to Kellen, who suspected he was involved in the theft.[6]

Shouren also temporarily filled in for Professor Filius Flitwick's Charms class, as Flitwick was feeling ill after inspecting the Dragon Paddock. He began teaching them the effects of the Mending Charm, intending to have them practise repairing a few small objects. However, his class was interrupted by a Ravenclaw student informing him that Argus Filch needed his help repairing suits of armor that were damaged by Peeves, with the poltergeist even trapping Mrs Norris inside of one suit. Shouren decided that the situation would be a perfect real-world opportunity for the students to practise the Mending Charm, allowing his students to help out with the repairs.[7]

Becoming a fugitive[]

Shouren eventually sent a message to the student letting them know that he had found a home for the hatchling and to take her to the forest's edge that midnight.[8]

Shouren encountered the student facing Kellen and talked to him about how he used to care about beasts. Kellen replied to Shouren that, after everything he taught him, Shouren had betrayed him. But Shouren told Kellen that he tried to save his life and he was left to die, claiming that Kellen had awoken Shouren's inner beast and he felt that it was devouring him for the worst, as it was doing to Kellen.[8]

Kellen had enough of the conversation and duelled Shouren, who was assisted by the student. After they bested Kellen, he ordered Qui LeBlanc to "get the little beast". Qui was followed by the student, and, after they duelled, Qui set the forest on fire. Shouren arrived to save the student from the fire and helped them face Kellen one more time. The baby Chinese Fireball eventually attacked Kellen and made him lose his wand, but Shouren saved Kellen and told him that he believed "everyone could change", even him.[8]

With the help of Colby, they escaped the forest. Colby let them know that some Ministry types would be arriving soon, looking for Shouren. Shouren decided to leave to avoid implicating the student and potentially losing the dragon hatchling. He became a fugitive for doing what was right, but trusted that, while there were people who knew the truth, he might do it freely someday. Shouren also told the student to care for the dragon for a little longer, as travelling with a dragon while being a fugitive would be difficult, and promised he'd return when it was safe. After that he left Hogwarts.[8]

Shouren returned as promised to take the dragon with him. He met with Hagrid in secret, with only the student and Colby present. Hagrid delivered the dragon to him and they saw them leave.[8]

One morning, Hagrid received an owl from Shouren letting him know that a "certain something" was safely delivered "somewhere", which he told the student about in the Great Hall.[8]

At some point after Shouren left Hogwarts, he was involved in an incident involving a poacher, an Erumpent, and a Muggle safari tour group.[9]

Shouren later sent a letter to the Muggle-born student informing them of the status of the baby dragon. He stated that the baby was growing well and that she had recently blown her first real fire breath. Shouren expressed his wish that the student could see the dragon, but asserted that it was still too dangerous for all involved for him to share his and the dragon's location. He stated that the baby dragon missed the student and that the both of them looked forward to the day they could be free to reunite with the student.[9]
