Lou Gehrig's disease, more scientifically known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or motor neurone disease (MND), was a disorder that caused progressive weakness and muscle atrophy, to the point where those affected were rendered completely immobile.[1]
Stephen Hawking, the author of A Brief History of Time, had lived with this condition for over two decades at the time of the book's publication.[2] He was thus required to use a wheelchair.[2]
