Lower Hogsfield was a hamlet located in the countryside south of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in Scotland. It was the closest hamlet to Hogwarts and in homage to the school that taught them all, the residents choose the name 'Hogsfield'. However, about the same time, the villagers of Upper Hogsfield also choose the name 'Hogsfield' after nearby Hogsmeade. An unhappy compromise was reached by applying the 'Upper' and 'Lower' qualifiers to their names.[1]

History[]

During the early 1890–1891 school year, a Hogwarts student met up with Natsai Onai here. After Natsai left, the student heard Nora Treadwell cry for help as she was being attacked by a number of Ashwinders. The student engaged the Ashwinders in a duel, eventually defeating them triumphantly. As a result, Nora told the student about the local Trial of Merlin in Lower Hogsfield, and how to use mallowsweet in order to access it.[2]
