- Student: "Your suitcase... you want me to have it?"
- Luna Scamander: "I knew Hagrid would be a wonderful caretaker, but we both agreed he might need help from someone with a passion for fantastic beasts."
- — Luna Scamander leaving the suitcase in Hagrid and the student's hands[src]
This suitcase was formerly owned by Luna Scamander before she gave it to Rubeus Hagrid and a Hogwarts student. It housed magical creatures such as a Hippogriff and several Thunderbirds.[1]
History[]
Brought to Hogwarts[]
At some point during her life as a Magizoologist, Luna Scamander acquired this suitcase. It contained environments that could house magical creatures, just like her husband's grandfather, Newt Scamander's suitcase.[1]
During the late 2000s or early 2010s at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Luna brought this suitcase to the school while assisting Rubeus Hagrid in investigating the mysterious infestation of baby Manticores within the school grounds. She accidentally released the Hippogriff and Thunderbirds living inside it when she opened the suitcase. One of the Thunderbirds created a local thunderstorm above Hagrid's Hut due to having caught a cold.[1]
When the Manticore investigation was over and Luna was about to leave, she left the suitcase in Hagrid's hands and asked the student that accompanied them throughout the investigation to help him with it.[1] After the transfer, there was only a Niffler that stayed inside the suitcase.[2]
Used by the student[]
Caring for the Niffler[]
Months later, the student entered the suitcase to furnish the space and begin their creature-caring. They saw a portrait of Newt Scamander and asked for advice. After learning that there was a Niffler there, they went to meet it, only to return to Newt's portrait moments later to ask what to do next. Newt talked about the nature of Nifflers, including how they liked sunlight and shiny things, and offered them a sunlight lamp.[2]
The student then thought about bringing a coin to the Niffler, but when they did it, it didn't seem satisfied. They reflected that it may've been not shiny enough, and suspected that the Niffler may've been sick. They thought the space was too dark, and implemented the sunlight lamp, which noticeably cheered the Niffler up for a while, but it soon became gloomy again.[2]
They went back to ask Newt about it, and he suggested that the Niffler may've wanted a nest, but building it required much manual work. The student tried building the nest at a crafting table following the instructions, and thought it was too scratchy, but after they put it down, the Niffler hopped in and made itself quite comfortable.[2]
The student asked about what food to give to the Niffler, and Newt talked about his experiences with developing recipes for magical creatures, and said there were a few ingredients that could only be acquired in deserts, which the student then did by going to Field Studies class. They obtained gravel and used it to make a food container. After filling it with food, they put it into the habitat, which attracted the Niffler but soon bored it.[2]
They went back to ask Newt about whether it was possible to provide a more interesting environment. Newt commended the idea, but suggested they observe carefully before proceeding to building. They found a pit in the habitat covered with sand, and thought it could be turned into a pond. They also found some uneven landscape, which could use some sand to flatten out. They told Newt about them, and he provided them materials. They first built a fountain that turned the pit into a pond, and then laid out some sand for the Niffler to play in.[2]
They then asked Newt how he managed with all his creatures, as they were a bit overwhelmed with just one Niffler. Newt encouraged them and, admitting things could get hectic with more creatures, offered them binoculars. The student took a look through them and saw they could see more clearer than when they were near the creature. They told Newt about it, and Newt reminded them that physical interaction was still important. He drew their attention to the Niffler which was fidgeting.[2]
The student went to see what it was about, and saw the Niffler gifting them something. They accepted gratefully, but, unsure what to do with it, went to ask Newt. He said it was a reward that the creature paid them back for their caring, and suggested they could use it to do more for their creatures further down the road. He pointed them to a notebook that could be used to record their experience with the creatures.[2]
