- "Young wizards aren't the only ones who go through phases..."
- — Aurora Sinistra regarding lunar phases[src]
Lunar phases were the shapes of the moon's directly sunlit portion as viewed from planet earth.[1] The moon shone so brightly in the night sky as it reflected light from the sun.[2]
History[]
It is known that the phases of the moon could affect potion-making; this was thoroughly studied by Hesper Starkey.[3][4][5][6] Examples of this included how only fluxweed picked during a full moon was acceptable to brew the Polyjuice Potion,[7] or how the Animagus potion required a Mandrake leaf to be struck directly by the moonlight in a crystal phial, after being soaked in the drinker's mouth for an entire month.[8] Veritaserum required one full moon cycle to mature.[9] Similarly, a putative cure for Spattergroit, as put forward by the portrait of a medieval healer at St Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries, included "to take the liver of a toad, bind it tight about your throat, stand naked by the full moon in a barrel of eels' eyes".[10]
Werewolves would transform into savage beasts on the full moon.[11] During the 1993–1994 school year, Hermione Granger was able to realise that Remus Lupin was a werewolf as he always became ill on the full moon, along with the fact that his Boggart assumed the form of a full moon.[12]
During the 1989–1990 school year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Professor Aurora Sinistra taught her sixth-year Astronomy students about lunar phases in an evening lesson.[2]
A lunascope was a type of telescope invented by Perpetua Fancourt[13] that showed phases of the moon, used to counter the difficulty of using moon charts.[14]
Behind the scenes[]
- Moon phases were an important aspect of Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, on the interactive game map of the real world. Real world moon phases would impact the types of "Oddities" (a type of Foundable) which would appear in the world; for example, werewolf Oddities could only be caught under a full moon.
