The MACUSA Department of Aurors[2] (also known as the American Auror Office)[1] was a department at the Magical Congress of the United States of America specifically tasked with the capture of dangerous criminals.[2]
History
It served as the headquarters of the American Aurors, and presumably functioned as the command centre for the US Auror Divisions throughout the United States. They shared a similar purpose to the Major Investigation Department, although it would appear that the latter often dealt with more large-scale threats to the security of the magical community of America than the rest of the Aurors.
The two divisions presumably would work alongside one another in the event of "very major incidents", as seen when MACUSA cornered the Obscurial Credence Barebone, where about forty Aurors were present to fight against and witness the exposure of Gellert Grindelwald, a number that clearly surpassed the handful of members of the Investigative Team that lead the assault.
The American Aurors were also militarised to a greater extent than their British counterparts, carrying ranks such as "Captain" and "Chief",[3] which may give some insight into how these divisions went about their work and how it differed from that of the British Auror Department.
Behind the scenes
- Seen as how the No-Maj Police Commissioner is the designated head of a police force, and that MACUSA was sufficiently familiar with their ranking system to adopt it and use it themselves, not to mention that the Aurors, like the police, works to uphold law and order, the Auror Commissioner[3] presumably serves as the designated head of the Department of Aurors.
- In most U.S. police departments, the rank of captain often denotes the officer in charge of a precinct. If such is the case in wizarding America as well, it might be that the US Auror Divisions have a "Captain of Aurors" in charge of it that reports to the Department of Aurors, with the Chief Auror being more of an administrative position charged with overseeing a given number of these divisions and keeps in touch with its captains to assist the Auror Commissioner.
- Although not confirmed, based on the name, it is possible that the local branches of the Federal Bureau of Covert Vigilance and No-Maj Obliviation also houses the Auror Divisions in that area, since the "vigilance" has become a mantra of sorts used by Aurors. (Such as Alastor Moody's "Constant vigilance!" or MACUSA's "Always Stay Vigilant!")
