This Mackled Malaclaw lived in the Magical Creatures Reserve in the 1980s and 1990s.[1]
Biography[]
During the 1980s or 1990s, this Mackled Malaclaw lived in the Open Oceans in the Magical Creatures Reserve, and Jacob's sibling would often bond with and feed this Mackled Malaclaw.[1]
At some point, the British Auror Office was pursuing a Dark wizard who was regularly able to evade them. They contacted Jacob's sibling for help and requested the aid of this Malaclaw in the hope that it could bite the Dark wizard and give him bad luck, making it easier for Aurors to capture him. Jacob's sibling agreed and sent this Malaclaw to the British Auror Office to help out. This Malaclaw managed to successfully bite the Dark wizard, enabling him to captured by Aurors, and safely returned to the Magical Creatures Reserve.[2]
During the 1986–1987 school year, this Malaclaw began to moult, resulting in it acting more nervously than usual due to its lack of protection. While it was in this state, Rubeus Hagrid reached out towards it, leading to this Malaclaw biting Hagrid. In the aftermath of the bite, Hagrid started suffering from a spate of bad luck, starting with a mishap with his ink-pot that resulted in ink spilling all over him and a set of notes he had written for Jacob's sibling on Mackled Malaclaw care being ruined.[1]
Hagrid called Jacob's sibling to his hut and explained the situation to them, stating that he would be forced to suffer a week of bad luck and thus would be unable to care for this Malaclaw properly while it molted. Jacob's sibling agreed to watch over this Malaclaw in Hagrid's place, with Hagrid recommending that they learn all they could about Malaclaws and their molting habits to determine how to keep it safe and content while in such a vulnerable state. Hagrid also offered his ink-stained notes to Jacob's sibling to attempt to decipher, as he had become unable to remember what he had written following the bite.[1]
Jacob's sibling planned to take this Malaclaw to the Hogwarts Library to do some research, but Hagrid indicated that Madam Irma Pince would not appreciate a creature in her library. Hagrid offered to prepare a small basket for them so that they could carry this Malaclaw while it remained safe and out of sight. Jacob's sibling brought this Malaclaw in the basket to the library, where it started to peek out of the basket. Jacob's sibling apologised to this Malaclaw and stated that it couldn't leave the basket yet.[1]
However, Nymphadora Tonks was nearby and happened to notice this Malaclaw peeking out of the basket. At Tonks's request, Jacob's sibling explained that they were trying to hide that they had a magical creature in the library and asked Tonks to stand guard while they researched Malaclaws and attempted to decipher Hagrid's notes. Following their research, Jacob's sibling came up with a plan, but, before they could tell Tonks about it, Madam Pince approached them and, believing that the basket contained food, reminded Jacob's sibling that food was prohibited in the library. Jacob's sibling attempted to explain that they didn't have any food but were eventually forced to admit that they were hiding this Malaclaw in the basket. Madam Pince ordered them to take this Malaclaw out of the library, to which Jacob's sibling agreed while Tonks offered her help with what Jacob's sibling was planning.[1]
Jacob's sibling explained the situation to Tonks and stated that Malaclaws required a special diet when they prepared to moult. They decided to take this Malaclaw back to the Open Ocean region of the Magical Creatures Reserve, with Jacob's sibling bringing some special creature food recommended by Hagrid's notes along to feed this Malaclaw. However, this Malaclaw refused to eat, with Jacob's sibling theorising that the stress of moulting might have caused it to lose its appetite. Jacob's sibling and Tonks were eventually successfully able to coax this Malaclaw into eating, although it accidentally almost bit Jacob's sibling in its excitement when they tried to offer it more food.[1]
Once this Malaclaw had eaten its fill, Jacob's sibling and Tonks decided to take it to see Hagrid to figure out what to do next. When they arrived at Hagrid's Hut, they found him with his head stuck in a pumpkin. Jacob's sibling attempted to use the Levitation Charm to lift the pumpkin off of Hagrid's head, but it was stuck on too tight to lift, levitating Hagrid's body in the process. Jacob's sibling stopped casting the spell, resulting in Hagrid falling back to the ground and the pumpkin cracking open, freeing him. Hagrid explained that, while he was gardening, a wasp suddenly tried to sting him and that he had tried to swat it away with his rake, but he lost his balance and fell headfirst into one of his best pumpkins.[1]
Jacob's sibling explained that this Malaclaw still seemed anxious, to which Hagrid suggested that they should try to look after its mood, claiming that if it was too stressed out, it might get sick during the moulting process. Tonks came up with a plan to cheer up this Malaclaw, with Jacob's sibling taking it to meet with her in the Courtyard. Tonks stated that she had brought all of her best joke products and toys to try to cheer up this Malaclaw, with the two playing with it until its claws accidentally burst their final ball. This Malaclaw seemed to enjoy playing with the pair, although Tonks was briefly scared it was going to accidentally bite her in its excitement.[1]
Jacob's sibling noticed that this Malaclaw was now all riled up, meaning that they needed to let its energy out before it could moult safely. Tonks offered to let this Malaclaw chase her in order to let out some energy, but stated that the Courtyard was too small to do so. Jacob's sibling decided to take this Malaclaw to the Training Grounds, with Tonks racing it there. The pair allowed this Malaclaw to chase them around the Training Grounds until it tired itself out. Jacob's sibling then stated that they had read that Malaclaws built dens in which to rest and recover before they moulted. The pair realised that this Malaclaw might already have a den, determining that it was likely in the Open Ocean region of the Magical Creatures Reserve due to its rocky coastline matching the typical habitat of a Malaclaw.[1]
Noticing that this Malaclaw had begun fussing with its shell, Jacob's sibling realised that it would soon be ready to moult. They and Tonks rushed this Malaclaw back to the Open Ocean region of the Magical Creatures Reserve, where they managed to find its den near a shipwreck. However, they noticed that the den didn't seem to be finished, with this Malaclaw hurriedly shifting rocks to attempt to finish it before it started to moult. Jacob's sibling and Tonks helped this Malaclaw to stack enough rocks to finish the den, with this Malaclaw quickly entering it to begin the moulting process.[1]
While they and Tonks waited for this Malaclaw to finish moulting, Jacob's sibling visited Hagrid, who had ended up in the Hospital Wing with his hands and feet encased in pumpkins after another fall in his garden. With the nurses being kept busy by someone having spilled Bulbadox powder in the Dungeons, Jacob's sibling removed the pumpkins for Hagrid before reassuring him that this Mackled Malaclaw was safe and was moulting successfully.[1]
A week later, this Malaclaw had finished moulting and Hagrid's bad luck had worn off. Jacob's sibling, Tonks, and Hagrid visited this Malaclaw at its den to see its new shell. However, this Malaclaw seemed hesitant to step out from its den, so Jacob's sibling, Tonks, and Hagrid encouraged it until it felt comfortable enough to step outside. The three marvelled at this Malaclaw's new shell while Hagrid commended Jacob's sibling for looking after it during its moult. Hagrid offered Jacob's sibling a a necklace and bracelet as thanks and Jacob's sibling praised this Malaclaw for being brave the whole time, with it allowing Jacob's sibling to shake its claw.[1]

- The Mackled Malaclaw's name, just like all creatures in the Magical Creatures Reserve, can be customised by the player. The dialogue of the quest will subsequently change according to the name determined by the player.
