Macmillan was the surname of a pure-blood[1] wizarding family, and one of the Sacred Twenty-Eight.[3] By the 1990s, the family comprised nine consecutive generations of pure-bloods.[1] Through Melania Black (née Macmillan), they were distantly related to the Black and Prewett families.[4]

The Macmillans were seemingly respectable in pure-blood circles, since Melania Macmillan married into the highly prejudiced House of Black.[4]

Etymology[]
Macmillan is a surname of Scottish origin. Clan MacMillan is a Highland Scottish clan dating back to at least the fourteenth century; Harold Macmillan was a British Prime Minister.
Behind the scenes[]
- Later generations of Macmillans may have been considered "blood traitors", since Ernie Macmillan had friends of other blood statuses and fought against Death Eater ideals as a member of Dumbledore's Army.[5] In addition, Ernie claimed his family had long been loyal supporters of Albus Dumbledore, who was known for his staunch opposition of wizarding supremacist ideals.
