Mads (pronounced: Mas) Dittmann Mikkelsen (born 22 November 1965) is a Danish actor, who portrays a middle-aged Gellert Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, taking over from Johnny Depp for the role.[1]

Early life and career[]
Originally a gymnast and dancer, he rose to fame in Denmark as an actor for his roles such as Tonny in the first two films of the Pusher film trilogy (1996, 2004), Detective Sergeant Allan Fischer in the television series Rejseholdet (2000–2004), Niels in Open Hearts (2002), Svend in The Green Butchers (2003), Ivan in Adam's Apples (2005) and Jacob Petersen in After the Wedding (2006).

Fantastic Beasts[]
After appearing in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, Johnny Depp was expected to return to portray Gellert Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore. However, Warner Bros. asked the actor to resign from the role in November 2020. Mads Mikkelsen would replace Johnny Depp in the role of Gellert Grindelwald.[1] On replacing Depp, Mikkelsen noted that it would be a "creative suicide" to copy Depp's "masterful" portrayal as Grindelwald, having developed his own take on the character, and admitted that a "bridge" should be needed between Depp's performance and his own,[2] having been a fan of Depp since his early films.[3] Despite the release of The Secrets of Dumbledore, Mads Mikkelsen believed that Johnny Depp could return as Grindelwald in another film.[4][5]
