Magical Maintenance was a division of the British Ministry of Magic. Members of this Department were the custodians of the Ministry. The personnel working in the Magical Maintenance Department wore navy blue robes.

Functions

Hermione Granger: "And what about that funny old witch and that little wizard in the navy robes?"

Ron Weasley: "Oh yeah, the bloke from Magical Maintenance."

Hermione Granger: "How do you know he works for Magical Maintenance?"

Ron Weasley: "Dad said everyone from Magical Maintenance wears navy blue robes."

They were responsible for maintaining the upkeep of the Ministry, including deciding what weather to display through the Ministry's enchanted windows and repairing magic gone wrong within the premises of the Ministry, such as rain inside an office.

Magical Maintenance was presumably in charge of maintaining the lifts and ensuring that the Atrium fireplaces were supplied with Floo Powder, in addition to less magical forms of maintenance such as tidying up.

History

The windows in the All-Purpose Room

At some point after the Ministry's inception in 1707, the All-Purpose Room was created as a multi-functional area to service various Ministry officials in a wide variety of capacities. At some point after this, the Magical Maintenance Department installed a set of enchanted windows in the room, which they bewitched so that when the Department changed the weather in it, all the other enchanted windows on the premises would change accordingly.

Agents of the Rare, Obscure, and Confounding Case Division (ROCC) claimed to work for this department as cover. Callum McClintock was an example. In 1992, Ruby Honeysuckle was transferred to this department after being removed from the ROCC.

Behind the scenes

• While Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows specifies that Magical Maintenance personnel wears navy blue robes, the film adaptation shows them wearing a thin overcoat of greyish-purple colour.
• Employees of this department seems to be the lowest ranking in the social ladder, as Dolores Umbridge was ashamed of her father Orford for being a member of this sector, mostly mopping floors within the Ministry. The pay also seems rather low, as Orford accepted a small monthly allowance from Dolores in exchange for an early retirement over staying with the paying job.
