Mahogany refers to a group of related tree species within the family Meliaceae that all produce a hard, reddish-brown wood. The genus Swietenia comprises three species termed “genuine mahogany” found in the Americas: Swietenia macrophylla, Swietenia mahagoni, and Swietenia humilis. Other genus-species within the Meliaceae family that produce similar timber are considered “true mahogany” trees, such as the Chinaberry Tree (Melia azedarach) native to India, Asia, and the Middle East.[1]

History

Mahogany is capable of producing wand quality wood, and was utilised by the wandmaker Garrick Ollivander.[2] James Potter's wand was crafted from mahogany. His wand was described by Ollivander as "pliable and excellent for transfiguration," also having "a little more power" than Lily Evans's wand.[2]

The handle of the Nimbus 2000 broomstick was made of mahogany.

Behind the scenes

  • While Garrick Ollivander was known to use mahogany (as evidenced by the fact that he created James Potter's wand), a description of mahogany wand wood was not included in his notes on Pottermore.
