Mallowsweet was a magical herb.[2]
History[]
During the 1890–1891 school year, Nora Treadwell was researching the use of mallowsweet in conjunction with the Trials of Merlin, a series of magical puzzles believed to have been created by Merlin during his time at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. With the help of the new fifth-year, she confirmed that mallowsweet was essential to activating one of the trials, a trick that the new fifth-year employed in solving the puzzles.[1]
Also during the same year, mallowsweet seeds could be bought from the The Magic Neep in Hogsmeade for 200 Galleons. These could be grown in small pots and the leaves harvested.[1]
Along with sage, centaurs burned this to observe the fumes and flames, in order to refine the results of their stargazing.[2]
Mallowsweet was also an ingredient of the Extra-Sweet Butterbeer concocted by Madam Rosmerta, and was kept in the Potions Classroom of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry; thus it was likely an ingredient used to brew certain potions.[3]
During the 1986–1987 school year, Penny Haywood's mallowsweet was stolen by a Demiguise.[4]

During the 1987–1988 school year, an unidentified mallowsweet seller was selling barrels of mallowsweet on the streets of Hogsmeade, though only to those who knew the password Repelenim Tainello. Jacob's sibling managed to acquire some of these barrels at a discount for the Three Broomsticks Inn and Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.[5]
