The Map Chamber was a chamber that was located deep below Hogwarts Castle that held the portraits of the Keepers, the four guardians of ancient magic.[2][1]
Description[]
The Map Chamber was located deep within a large, light-filled cavern. The architecture of the Map Chamber reflected the era of the Keepers, the Tudor era with its Tudor-style trefoil arches. The Map Chamber featured a water wall and a tower of flame with a statue of an elemental being standing watch. A Pensieve was set on a podium and at its base was a silhouette of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry carved in wood.[1]
There were fours portraits for each of the Keepers. If book was put the podium, it would release ancient magic to reveal a spectral map of the area. It would signal the location of four trials for a student who could perceive ancient magic.[3]
Finding the chamber[]
In order to lead a wizard to it, the Keepers created a trail. They opened a vault at Gringotts for which the key was put in a special casing. It could only be opened by someone who could perceive ancient magic.[4]
Once they entered the vault, they would find a pensieve with a locket levitating above it. The locket had a memory inside of two Keepers creating the vault. If the inscription on the locket was read, it opened to reveal a map. The map led to the Restricted Section where there was a hidden entrance to the Athenaeum. Its Antechamber had a pensieve with a book levitating above it. The book contained a map to the Map Chamber.
History[]
The chamber was built in the Tudor period by the Keepers.
During the 1890–1891 school year, a student of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry with the ability to find ancient magic found the Map Chamber with the help of Professor Eleazar Fig and the ghost of Richard Jackdaw.
