This Matagot befriended Mrs Norris in the 1980s.[1]
Biography[]
During the 1988–1989 school year, this Matagot met and befriended Mrs Norris, playing with her repeatedly over several days. Eventually, Mrs Norris's owner, Argus Filch, noticed that she was seemingly being followed by a mysterious beast while they were leaving the Hogwarts Library after a visit with Madam Irma Pince, with the creature continuing to follow her over the following days. Filch reported this situation to Rubeus Hagrid, who asked Jacob's sibling to meet up with them in the Three Broomsticks Inn in order to ask for their help. Jacob's sibling initially assumed that Filch was still upset about their having previously turned Mrs Norris pink temporarily for the Valentine's Day Ball, but, upon being informed of the situation, asked Filch to try to describe the creature.[1]
Filch's description, combined with Madam Rosmerta's mention that she had seen several black cats lurking behind the pub, led Hagrid to suggest that Mrs Norris was actually being stalked by a Matagot, surprising Jacob's sibling, who had previously bonded with another Matagot at the Magical Creatures Reserve. Hagrid explained that Matagots were usually friendly but, if they felt threatened or if someone tried to cast a spell against them, they could be very dangerous. Hagrid claimed that Filch was therefore right to meet them far away from Hogwarts, to which Filch affirmed, stating that he wouldn't let Mrs Norris out of his sight until the creature was dealt with.[1]
Jacob's sibling offered to track down the Matagot and keep Mrs Norris safe from it, hoping to keep Hogwarts safe for all who lived within it. They asked Filch where he had last seen the Matagot, with Filch claiming that he had seen it hiding at the Training Grounds during his morning patrol of the area. Jacob's sibling suggested that Filch and Mrs Norris should wait in the Clock Tower Courtyard until the matter had been dealt with and then headed out in search of the rogue Matagot.[1]
Upon arriving at the Training Grounds, Jacob's sibling encountered Ben Copper practising Anteoculatia and other offensive spells on a set of Mechanical Death Eaters. After both explained to the other what they were doing on the Training Grounds, Ben offered his help in tracking down the stray Matagot, with Jacob's sibling asking if he saw anything unusual in the area where the creature was last seen. While Ben claimed that he had seen Chiara Lobosca heading towards the Forbidden Forest, he hadn't seen or heard any mysterious creature lurking around the area despite being there all night. At that moment, the pair heard a loud sound seemingly coming from somewhere nearby. The pair searched the area to try to find the source of the sound, hearing it again from somewhere behind an entrance way.[1]
At that moment, a black cat emerged from the entrance way and entered the Training Grounds. Thinking the cat was harmless, Ben attempted to approach it despite Jacob's sibling's warnings, leading to the cat morphing into its spirit form in response, revealing that it was the rogue Matagot. Jacob's sibling and Ben quickly moved out of this Matagot's way as it ran away from the Training Grounds and towards the Clock Tower Courtyard, with Jacob's sibling rushing after it to ensure that it didn't harm Mrs Norris. Upon reaching the courtyard, Jacob's sibling encountered Mrs Norris seemingly fighting with this Matagot, now back in its black cat form, much to the anger of Filch. Jacob's sibling successfully managed to scare this Matagot away from Mrs Norris, with it transforming once again as it escaped, leading to a rare moment of gratitude from Filch.[1]
Liz Tuttle suddenly arrived at the courtyard, saddened that Jacob's sibling had chased away this "cute" Matagot. After Jacob's sibling explained the situation to her, Liz claimed that this Matagot attacking Mrs Norris didn't make any sense based on her observations, suggesting that the situation might be due to a misunderstanding. Liz suggested that this Matagot was actually trying to play with Mrs Norris, explaining that she had observed them playing together repeatedly and claiming that the two were actually friends, with the situation reminding Jacob's sibling of Mrs Norris befriending a Chimaera previously.[1]
Filch, now furious that Jacob's sibling had made Mrs Norris upset by chasing away this Matagot, demanded that they find it and reunite the two. Jacob's sibling agreed to try to find the creature, but claimed that it would take time and effort to earn its trust after having just chased it off. Jacob's sibling decided to locate this Matagot and then bring it to Hagrid, hoping that he could help them bond with the creature. Hagrid soon informed Jacob's sibling that this Matagot had fled to his garden, where Jacob's sibling met up with him and explained their misunderstanding. Hagrid agreed to help Jacob's sibling gain this Matagot's trust, but suggested that they needed to calm down the agitated Matagot first, claiming that Matagots were very dangerous when they felt threatened, especially in their spirit form.[1]
Hagrid suggested that Jacob's sibling should try to revert this Matagot back to its friendlier form by showing it that they meant no harm through a friendly gesture, with Jacob's sibling realising that they could try offering it some food. Jacob's sibling managed to convince this Matagot to return to its friendly form as a result of the food offering, with Hagrid claiming that it was now safe to try to befriend it. Jacob's sibling attempted to approach this Matagot to give it a friendly pat, but Fang suddenly ran into the garden and began to bark at this Matagot, scaring it away once again. Hagrid explained that Fang used to be scared of cats, with his aggressive reaction to this Matagot appearing to be overcompensation for his previous fear.[1]
However, Jacob's sibling realised that this Matagot's reaction to dogs, in combination with other feline-like behaviours it had displayed that resembled those of Jacob's sibling's pet cat, meant that speaking with another magical feline owner might help them understand how to best befriend this Matagot. Hagrid agreed and suggested that Jacob's sibling should speak with Hogwarts' Quidditch announcer Murphy McNully, as he owned a Kneazle named Kneil and would surely be willing to help. After rounding up this Matagot, Jacob's sibling met with Murphy and Kneil in the Care of Magical Creatures classroom and explained the situation to them. Jacob's sibling claimed that, while they did own a cat, it wasn't a magical creature like Kneil was, asking Murphy to help teach them some tricks to try to appeal to this Matagot's cat-like instincts. Murphy agreed to help and suggested that Jacob's sibling could use a bright light and allow the Matagot to chase it, leading to Jacob's sibling suggesting that they could illuminate the tip of their wand with the Wand-Lighting Charm and allow this Matagot to chase after it. Jacob's sibling quickly cast the spell, resulting in this Matagot happily playing with them.[1]
However, at that moment, Merula Snyde, mistakenly believing that the "hideous black cat" was trying to attack Jacob's sibling, charged at this Matagot, which immediately transitioned back into its spirit form in fright. Jacob's sibling attempted to explain the situation, but Merula quickly cast a Stunning Spell at this Matagot, hitting it and causing it to split into two Matagots. Both Matagots quickly ran away from the scene, with Merula following after them, swearing to find them and drive them away from Hogwarts once and for all. Jacob's sibling followed after them, finding Merula threatening both Matagots in the Forest Grove of the Forbidden Forest. Jacob's sibling finally managed to explain the situation to Merula, revealing that this Matagot was not attacking them and that it was actually friends with Mrs Norris. Merula agreed that she had jumped to conclusions about the Matagot, explaining that her aunt had raised her to believe black cats were evil and that she had assumed the worst when she saw this Matagot, although she continued to deny that she was superstitious or that she believed in bad luck.[1]
Merula agreed to allow the newly duplicated Matagots to remain on Hogwarts grounds, although she claimed that she was doing so for Mrs Norris, not Jacob's sibling. Jacob's sibling offered some treats to the Matagots, calming them both down. Upon hearing that Jacob's sibling was taking these Matagots back to Hagrid's garden to reunite with Mrs Norris, Merula decided to join them there, sheepishly claiming that she would be there for security purposes rather than getting the opportunity to watch adorable creatures play. Jacob's sibling brought both of these Matagots back to Hagrid's garden, where they met up with Filch, Mrs Norris, Hagrid, Merula, Liz, Murphy, and Kneil. As the two Matagots played with Mrs Norris and Kneil, Filch thanked Jacob's sibling for helping make Mrs Norris happier, but was confused as to why there were now two Matagots, to which Jacob's sibling jokingly offered to tell Filch over some Butterbeers at the Three Broomsticks, to Filch's slight annoyance.[1]
The group then watched the two Matagots happily playing with Mrs Norris and Kneil, with Hagrid thanking Jacob's sibling for all of their help. After the Matagots allowed Jacob's sibling to pet them, Hagrid claimed that Jacob's sibling had proven that they were a true friend to these creatures, suggesting that they should be allowed to stay at Hogwarts so that Jacob's sibling and Mrs Norris could visit them whenever they liked, to which Jacob's sibling happily agreed. Hagrid affirmed that Jacob's sibling should also keep inviting their older friends to these play-dates, with Jacob's sibling happily confirming that they would even invite Merula to watch the creatures playing once again.[1]
