- "You'll be starting small, just matches into needles and that sort of thing—"
- — Percy Weasley[src]
This spell (incantation unknown) was used to transform a match into a needle.[1] It was one of the simplest transfiguration spells.[2]
Nature and teaching[]
Due to its being the simplest spell of transfiguration, this was the first spell taught in transfiguration class (after they take many complicated notes).[1]
It seemed, however, that even beginning students had trouble with it; by the end of their first lesson, only Hermione Granger had made a substantial improvement to her match, and Professor Minerva McGonagall proudly showed the class how it had turned silver and was rather pointy. She later gave the class "a pile of homework", presumably on the subject of this spell.[1]
Morag tried to light her match, and was scolded by Professor McGonagall.[3]
