A matron was a senior nurse that either led a hospital, where they monitored health and healed the wounded,[1] or an orphanage, where they took care of children.[2]

Noreen Blainey[]
Noreen Blainey was the matron at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the 1890s. She was a recent graduate when she started working there and had to learn through experience while she brought the Hospital Wing up to code.[3]
Poppy Pomfrey[]
- "Madam Pomfrey, the matron, was a nice woman, but very strict."
- — Madam Pomfrey's nature[src]
Madam Poppy Pomfrey was the matron at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the Hospital Wing.[1] She was working there as of 1971, and stepped down as matron by 2014.[4]
Poppy cared for and healed the wounded and sick at Hogwarts. She was strict but exceptionally kind, as she insisted that anyone in her care had to stay until she was certain they were healed, and was unhappy when there were many visitors.[1] Poppy would also administer and make healing potions when needed, such as Skele-Gro,[5] the Wound-Cleaning Potion[6] or the Calming Draught.[7] The Matron of Hogwarts also possessed some disciplinary powers, being able to award and dock house points. In 1985, Madam Pomfrey gave Jacob's sibling twenty house points for helping her in the hospital wing.[8]
Hannah Abbott[]
Hannah Abbott applied for the job of Matron at Hogwarts in 2014 having trained as a healer. It is unknown whether she succeeded in obtaining the position.[4]
Orphanage matron[]
Wool's Orphanage[]
Cole[]
- "... and take the iodine upstairs to Martha, Billy Stubbs has been picking his scabs and Eric Whalley's oozing all over his sheets — chicken pox on top of everything else."
- — Mrs Cole to Wool's Orphanage staff[src]
Mrs Cole was the matron at Wool's Orphanage in the 1930s. She was present when Tom Riddle received a visit from Albus Dumbledore in 1937, where she explained that Tom was unlike most children she knew. Although she appeared caring, she was also very sharp in a way that could be thought as inconvenient.[2]
