Merlin Remembrance Day was a suggested public holiday in honour of Merlin, a legendary medieval wizard known as "the most famous wizard of all time".[1]
History[]
The holiday was suggested in a reader's letter to the Daily Prophet published 31 July 1998. The letter, however, indicated that the holiday was only suggested to establish a new public holiday, and thus provide an additional day per year off of work, rather than any legitimate desire to honour Merlin. Whether this holiday was ever implemented is unknown.[1]
Behind the scenes[]
- Merlin Remembrance Day was mentioned in Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery (see this video), but this cannot be considered canonical, as a higher source (the Daily Prophet Newsletters, written by J. K. Rowling herself) says that it was not an existing holiday in the wizarding world and the proposal for the holiday's creation was submitted in 1998, long after the 1987–1988 school year during which the mention was made.
