A mixture of powdered silver and dittany was used by wizards to treat werewolf bites, thus preventing a victim from bleeding to death. Despite this, there were several tales of wizards who begged to be allowed to die, rather than face life as a werewolf.[1]
The different ways of treating werewolf bites were covered on the first year Defence Against the Dark Arts curriculum at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry[2] (something that the Ministry of Magic deemed an "age appropriate subject").[3]
This mixture was, with all likelihood, behind the (false) Muggle belief that a werewolf could be killed by using a silver bullet.[1]
