"Moke skin is highly prized among wizards for use as moneybags and purses, as the scaly material will contract at the approach of a stranger, just as its owner did; Moke-skin moneybags are therefore very difficult for thieves to locate."
Newton Scamander on the properties of mokeskin[src]

Mokeskin (also stylised moke skin and moke-skin) is the hide of a moke. It retains the property of its owner to shrink when approached by someone unfamiliar, and is thus used to make moneybags, purses, and pouches.[1] Gloves can also be made from the material, and are sold at Madam Malkin's Robes for All Occasions.[2] Harry Potter received such a pouch for his seventeenth birthday from Rubeus Hagrid.[3]

Behind the scenes

  • The reasoning behind making gloves out of mokeskin is unclear, as the skin's properties of shrinking upon approach of a stranger would presumably make wearing them uncomfortable.
