Monkey (2003 – 2013) was a male Neapolitan Mastiff who portrayed Fang in the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.[2] He was preceded in this role by Hugo, and was followed by Uno.
Biography[]
After Hugo was due to retire, Julie Tottman, Harry Potter's head animal trainer between 2000 and 2011, needed to quickly find a replacement Neapolitan Mastiff, which was quite difficult as it was such a rare breed that was tricky to work with. She found Monkey (then called Hercules) in Northampton, who was supposedly abandoned due to his "aggressive" nature, though Julie believed this was just an excuse from a family that was likely unprepared for caring for such a large and expensive dog. Julie renamed him to Monkey to suit his goofy personality.[1]
Monkey died in 2013 after developing cancer and was replaced by Uno.[1]
